class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arctic sea ice has continued its recent recovery despite 2023 being&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/featured-images\/2023-was-warmest-year-modern-temperature-record#:~:text=The%20year%202023%20was%20the,decade%20(2014%E2%80%932023).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>&nbsp;as the hottest year on record globally, according to data recorded by Germany\u2019s Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI). From the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.meereisportal.de\/newsliste\/detail\/saisonales-maximum-der-meereisausdehnung-in-der-arktis-und-minimum-in-der-antarktis-erreicht\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AWI website<\/a>&nbsp;(hat tip:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/notrickszone.com\/2024\/03\/27\/germanys-alfred-wegener-institute-shows-january-arctic-sea-ice-now-20-years-stable\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pierre Gosselin<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The slight recovery trend since the Arctic minimum was reached is continuing at the beginning of 2024, with the sea ice extent at the beginning of the year below the average value for the years 1981-2010, but in the lower range of the extreme values (minimum\/maximum) of this international climate normal period (Figure 1).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we look at the new reference period 1991-2020 introduced by the World Meteorological Organisation in 2021, January 2024 is roughly in line with the mean value of this period (see interactive graphic). The average Arctic sea ice extent in January was 13.99 million square kilometers, around 400,000 square kilometers greater than the ice cover in January over the last 20 years (Figure 2).
