\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month we heard that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/03\/05\/the-anthropocene-not-or-maybe-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the International Union of Geological Sciences commission on the Anthropocene voted not to declare that the Earth&nbsp;<\/a>&nbsp;had entered a new epoch of geological time: neither now or in 1950.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reporting at that time included that the chair and the vice-chair of the commission both objected to the vote.&nbsp;<em>\u201cEven so, it was unclear Tuesday morning&nbsp;<\/em><em>[March 5<sup>th<\/sup>]<\/em><em>&nbsp;whether the results stood as a conclusive rejection or whether they might still be challenged or appealed. In an email to The Times, the committee\u2019s chair, Jan A. Zalasiewicz, said there were \u201csome procedural issues to consider\u201d but declined to discuss them further. Dr. Zalasiewicz, a geologist at the University of Leicester, has expressed support for canonizing the Anthropocene.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/20\/climate\/anthropocene-vote-upheld.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NY Times has an update<\/a>&nbsp;on the issue:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c<\/em><em>March 20, 2024Updated 11:22 a.m. ET<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The highest governing body in geology has upheld&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/05\/climate\/anthropocene-epoch-vote-rejected.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a contested vote by scientists<\/a>&nbsp;against adding the Anthropocene, or human age, to the official timeline of Earth\u2019s history.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The vote, which a committee of around two dozen scholars held in February, brought an end to nearly 15 years of debate about whether to declare that our species had transformed the natural world so thoroughly since the 1950s as to have sent the planet into a new epoch of geologic time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the continued objections of&nbsp;<em>Dr. Zalasiewicz and his vice-chair, Martin J. Head:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;\u201c\u2026<\/em><em>the committee\u2019s parent body, the International Union of Geological Sciences, has decided the results will stand, the union\u2019s executive committee said in a statement on Wednesday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>That means it\u2019s official.
