Former Gatwick chief says the West places too much emphasis on environmental concerns.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heathrow\u2019s inability to expand means it has lost its status as\u00a0a global transport hub<\/a>, the boss of Dubai Airports has said.\u00a0The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Griffiths,\u00a0formerly managing director of Gatwick Airport<\/a>\u00a0before he moved to the Middle East, said Heathrow is suffering from a shortage of capacity amid an ongoing debate over a prospective third runway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said too much weight is given to the environmental impact of travel in the West, which has allowed rival airports abroad to gain momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Griffiths said: \u201cThe true competition between airlines and airports is in the transfer market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd unfortunately, because of the shortage in capacity, Heathrow has lost its status as a transfer hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think the problem in the West is that the development of airports is an incredibly political thing. Heathrow\u2019s third runway<\/a> has been in play for 50 years and we\u2019re no further forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe environmental impact is a very topical subject in the developed world and I think that\u2019s an issue because I don\u2019t think there\u2019s a balanced debate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mr Griffiths, who sits on Dubai Airport\u2019s board alongside Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, added: \u201cIt\u2019s quite a sorry sight that the thing that could really put a shot in the arm of the British economy is being stifled because there is not enough capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His comments come amid a period of significant change at Heathrow, which Thomas Woldbye is now running as chief executive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dane, who replaced John Holland-Kaye last year, has so far refused to commit fully to a third runway amid opposition from climate activists and local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He has also taken the reins at Heathrow as 60pc of the airport\u00a0is up for sale<\/a>, a process that was triggered by Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund acquiring a stake late last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An injection of cash from new owners has raised hopes of an overhaul at Heathrow, although Mr Griffiths said he no longer views Britain\u2019s busiest airport as among the world\u2019s most competitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe players are shifting,\u201d he said. \u201cOur biggest player is not Heathrow or Gatwick. It is what\u2019s happening in Qatar or Istanbul. They are determined to capture market share from us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
