But in an interview, published on Tuesday, Woods argued that big oil is not primarily responsible for the climate crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real issue, Woods said, is that the clean-energy transition may prove too expensive for consumers\u2019 liking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c<strong>The dirty secret nobody talks about is how much all this is going to cost and who\u2019s willing to pay for it<\/strong>,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ukw3jhkxm-Q\">he told Fortune last week<\/a>. \u201cThe people who are generating those emissions need to be aware of and pay the price for generating those emissions. Woods also said that \u201cToday\u2019s technology will not solve this problem\u201d, and emphasised the importance of getting the cost down, and the need for cost transparency with end users \u2013 and how important getting the cost down is for people\u2019s willingness to pay for Net Zero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Woods called for a carbon price (23:10 minutes).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">30:55 \u201cI will tell you today, there is not a viable market where consumers step in and are willing to pay a premium for low carbon products. That is the reality of what we face today. I can\u2019t drive demand, and I can\u2019t make consumers pay more for low carbon products\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The big question \u2013 why are Greens so upset with what Exxon CEO Darren Woods said?<\/strong>&nbsp;Darren\u2019s responses to questions in the video amounted to suggesting the government needs to do more to make low carbon options palatable, by putting a price on carbon, by supporting efforts to bring down the price of green solutions, or both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think&nbsp;<strong>what upset Greens is the Exxon CEO\u2019s suggestion that Greens have to take personal responsibility<\/strong>&nbsp;for their piece of the Net Zero transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And of course, greens were likely upset by the Exxon CEOs suggestion that green energy is expensive \u2013 which contradicts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/business.columbia.edu\/faculty\/people\/gernot-wagner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Columbia Business School Gernot Wagner\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;claim that&nbsp;<strong>Exxon is \u201cignoring [renewables] the cheapest source of electricity in history\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 at least I presume he is talking about renewables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wagner\u2019s inference that renewables are cheap is absurd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Green energy is not cheap, it is hideously expensive.<\/strong>&nbsp;You just need to look at runaway energy prices in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/05\/08\/californias-retail-electricity-price-highest-in-the-continental-u-s-more-than-double-the-western-u-s-average-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/02\/12\/the-deindustrialization-of-europe-in-five-charts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Europe<\/a>, both champions of green energy, to know how expensive real world green energy is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even worse, the cost of energy in places like California and Europe is not a problem with implementation.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2014\/11\/22\/shocker-top-google-engineers-say-renewable-energy-simply-wont-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google admitted Net Zero is impossibly expensive in 2014<\/a>, with an article published in&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/energy\/renewables\/what-it-would-really-take-to-reverse-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spectrum<\/a>, about their failed attempt to discover an economically viable path to Net Zero. \u201c<em>Renewable energy technologies simply won\u2019t work; we need a fundamentally different approach.<\/em>\u201c. The Google team failed to find an economically viable path to replacing coal with renewables, even when they added science fiction assumptions to their models, like wind towers which erect themselves without human assistance. The Google study authors were not advocating giving up, they were just saying more or less the same as Exxon CEO Darren Woods said in the video above. Today\u2019s green energy technology is not a viable solution to the world\u2019s energy needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you think of a more woke, leftist, green leaning company than Google? If&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/energy\/renewables\/what-it-would-really-take-to-reverse-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">even Google say green energy with current technology cannot work<\/a>, perhaps Google are also part of Wagner\u2019s conspiracy of energy company capitalists who are plotting to reduce their own profits?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blaming Exxon, weaving bizarre big oil conspiracy theories, and&nbsp;<strong>responding with fury to the suggestion that greens themselves have to take personal responsibility<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 well I guess we\u2019re all used to seeing that from greens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are also used to seeing lots of hypocrisy from greens. Greens have not exactly been champions of the lifestyle choices they want to inflict on everyone else, somehow the special people usually give themselves a moral pass from the rules they want to inflict on the rest of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t know if Gernot Wagner is personally a green hypocrite, but plenty of his fellow travellers are. I mean, how often have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2022\/11\/12\/the-bbc-defends-special-people-flying-private-jets-to-cop27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we seen greens jetting off to climate conferences and making pathetic excuses<\/a>&nbsp;for why they should be allowed to fly, while demanding everyone else&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/12\/11\/cnn-its-time-to-limit-how-often-we-can-travel-abroad-carbon-passports-may-be-the-answer-drastic-changes-to-our-travel-habits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have their flights rationed<\/a>&nbsp;for the sake of the planet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who can forget embarrassing failures of greens to follow their own policy prescriptions, like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/06\/14\/german-green-party-headquarters-heat-pump-debacle-5-million-euros-cost-still-no-heat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the German Green Party\u2019s hilariously expensive failure to install a functioning heat pump in their own headquarters<\/a>, despite demanding Germany immediately pass laws which make such heat pumps mandatory for office buildings?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Greens want the rest of us to even consider following their lead, they need to start practicing what they preach, by showing us through personal example that Net Zero is viable and affordable, instead of blaming others like Exxon CEO Darren Woods for their own personal failure to transition to a greener lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Green energy is not cheap, it is hideously expensive.
