class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent article in&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2024\/feb\/28\/us-midwest-record-low-snow-winter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vanishing ice and snow: record warm winter wreaks havoc across US Midwest,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;describes the very mild winter much of the American Midwest has experienced this year, claiming that it is due to climate change. While a declining trend towards less-severe winters may in part reflect modest warming, the intensity of this winter\u2019s warmth is more likely explained by El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;asserts that ice cover across the Great Lakes has been declining since the early 1970s, writing that while the historic average for mid-February is around 40%, \u201cthis year it was about 4%.\u201d Grand Forks, North Dakota; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Minneapolis-St Paul, Minnesota, are listed as having recorded their warmest winter, and the&nbsp;<em>Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;links to evidence in the form of an article from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/storms\/winter\/news\/2024-02-15-record-warm-winter-midwest-northeast-west-2023-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">weather.com<\/a>. Interestingly, directly beneath the states listed in the weather.com post referenced in the article is this statement, \u201c[t]he Twin Cities\u2019 warmest winter, by the way, was 146 years ago in 1877-78, when Rutherford B. Hayes was president.\u201d&nbsp;<em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;neglected to mention that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate change is the culprit, claims&nbsp;<em>The<\/em>&nbsp;<em>Guardian<\/em>, but their own weather.com source lists two natural causes for this year\u2019s mildness, including El Ni\u00f1o and a lack of \u201cpersistent blocking patterns \u2013 such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/storms\/winter\/news\/2019-01-22-alaska-greenland-blocking-high-pressure-bring-cold-snow-eastern-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greenland block<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 that pull cold air from Canada and lock it into the U.S. for longer than a few days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding El Ni\u00f1o, weather.com says \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/storms\/winter\/news\/2023-10-31-el-nino-winter-changes-snowfall-precip-temps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">[w]armer winters are typical<\/a>&nbsp;across the northern tier of states during a strong El Ni\u00f1o.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing, weather.com reports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite a few recent storms, this season\u2019s winter storm pace across the country is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/wxjerdman\/status\/1758143775631675592\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slowest in 10 years<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nohrsc.noaa.gov\/snow_model\/images\/full\/National\/nsm_depth\/202402\/nsm_depth_2024022605_National.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">just 14% of the Lower 48 covered by snow as of Feb. 26<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The warmth also left\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/weather.com\/news\/climate\/video\/great-lakes-ice-cover-at-record-lows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Lakes ice cover at a 51-year low for mid-February<\/a>, including an ice-free Lake Erie and just\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/media\/set?vanity=ExtremePhotography1&amp;set=a.917507017041704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a few small bays of Lake Superior with any ice<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In case you missed the point, the ice was this low 51 years of global warming ago, when the Earth was not only cooler, but it was in a cooling trend. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climaterealism.com\/2024\/01\/false-washington-post-low-great-lakes-ice-levels-are-not-proof-of-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent post<\/a>&nbsp;at&nbsp;<em>Climate Realism<\/em>&nbsp;covers this specific subject in more detail, with H. Sterling Burnett writing \u201cthe last time the Great Lakes ice coverage was this low in January was in the early 1970s, a time when global average temperatures were cooling, which m<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Global_cooling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">any scientists<\/a>&nbsp;claimed at the time could be a sign of a coming ice age.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, ice coverage data for the Great Lakes show that coverage is highly variable from year to year. Plotted annual maximum\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glerl.noaa.gov\/data\/ice\/#historical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data<\/a>\u00a0from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glerl.noaa.gov\/data\/ice\/glicd\/dates_AMIC.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory<\/a>\u00a0show as much. On Lake Superior, Erie, and Huron, for example, most winters touch the 90% ice coverage range. On Lake Michigan, which has lower ice coverage averages, the record ice coverage is tied between two years; 1977 and 2014. Lake Ontario likewise traditionally has less coverage, and has its record high in 1979, and second-highest ice coverage in 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Guardian<\/em>&nbsp;also says that a&nbsp;\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/lnks.gd\/l\/eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiJ9.eyJidWxsZXRpbl9saW5rX2lkIjoxMDYsInVyaSI6ImJwMjpjbGljayIsInVybCI6Imh0dHBzOi8vd3d3LmNsaW1hdGVodWJzLnVzZGEuZ292L3NpdGVzL2RlZmF1bHQvZmlsZXMvQ2xpbWF0ZSUyMENoYW5nZSUyMEltcGFjdHMlMjBvbiUyME1pbm5lc290YSUyMEFncmljdWx0dXJlLnBkZj91dG1fbWVkaXVtPWVtYWlsJnV0bV9zb3VyY2U9Z292ZGVsaXZlcnkiLCJidWxsZXRpbl9pZCI6IjIwMjQwMTMwLjg5MzU2NDExIn0.64c26vPjh0ITICEi1X62SOYcDDMieeMqCRcC0-XwcK4\/s\/3030176747\/br\/236210000075-l\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report published in January<\/a>&nbsp;found that the number of -35F (-37.2C) readings in northern Minnesota have fallen by up to 90%,\u201d they point out that low temperatures play a role in weed and pest control, which is true enough, however they neglect to mention that extreme cold kills human beings as well, and at much higher rates than extreme heat does. They also fail to mention that longer, colder winters result in fewer crop rotations and production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climateataglance.com\/climate-at-a-glance-temperature-related-deaths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Climate at a Glance: Temperature Related Deaths<\/em><\/a>, multiple studies back up the fact that cold is deadlier than heat all around the world. One study, published in the Lancet in 2021, found that while 600,000 people die globally from heat, over 6 million die from cold. This year\u2019s winter is particularly mild not because of climate change but because of natural weather patterns, and a long-term trend in declining extreme cold is actually better for human survival.
