Politicians and activists alike have warned of a looming climate catastrophe for decades. \u201cBiden urged to declare climate change a national emergency,\u201d reported NBC last year<\/a>. \u201cClimate Changes Threatens Every Facet of U.S. Society, Federal Report Warns,\u201d announced Scientific American<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cambridge University climate scientist Mike Hulme disagrees. \u201cDeclaring a climate emergency has a chilling effect on politics,\u201d he tells Public. \u201cIt suggests there isn\u2019t time for normal, necessary democratic process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climate activists may dismiss Hulme as a \u201cclimate denier,\u201d but he agrees the planet is warming due to human activities and specifically says we should prepare for more heat waves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, Hulme\u2019s credentials are undeniably impressive. He is a Professor at the University of Cambridge and founding Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research. Hulme has advised everyone from the United Nations to the UK Government and earned a personalized certificate from the Nobel Peace Prize committee for his work with the UN\u2019s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, in his new book,\u00a0Climate Change Isn\u2019t Everything<\/a><\/em>, Hulme strongly denounces \u201cclimatism,\u201d which\u00a0he describes<\/a>\u00a0as the \u201cunyielding belief that stopping climate change is the pre-eminent yardstick against which all policies must be measured.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
