We have corporate social responsibility<strong>\u00a0(CSR),<\/strong>\u00a0environmental and social governance<strong>\u00a0(ESG),<\/strong>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>precautionary principle, and sustainable development.<\/strong>\u00a0What all these buzz-phrases mean is another question. Released last June, the&nbsp;<strong>ISSB&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrs.org\/news-and-events\/news\/2023\/06\/issb-issues-ifrs-s1-ifrs-s2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">standards<\/a>&nbsp;will require corporations and investment organizations around the world<\/strong>&nbsp;to adopt common reporting approaches to climate and other environmental issues. It\u2019s an authoritarian, top-down and anti-competitive regime that leaves no country or sector free to set its own rules.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">All nations and regulators are to be locked in a global climate-control structure.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Canada is part of that structure through the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frascanada.ca\/en\/cssb\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Sustainability Standards Board<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0which this month announced a public consultation to advance adoption of sustainability disclosure standards in Canada. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frascanada.ca\/en\/cssb\/news-listings\/cssb-public-consultation#:~:text=The%20CSSB%20will%20issue%20proposals,with%20Canadian%2Dspecific%20modifications%20suggested.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consultation<\/a>\u00a0begins in March and runs through to June. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ccli.ubc.ca\/resource\/submission-to-the-canadian-securities-administrators-csa-on-proposed-national-instrument-51-107-disclosure-of-climate-related-matters-ni-51-107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a>&nbsp;released earlier this month by the Canada Climate Law Initiative at the University of British Columbia<strong>&nbsp;urged regulators to move forward quickly with new sustainability standards.<\/strong>&nbsp;Failure to act in concordance with the ISSB could cause Canada to lose international investment flows, the report claims.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rclutz.files.wordpress.com\/2024\/02\/left-ideas-dont-work.png?w=723\"><em><a href=\"https:\/\/rclutz.files.wordpress.com\/2024\/02\/left-ideas-dont-work.png\"><\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The document continues through 20 pages of<strong>&nbsp;detailed recommendations<\/strong>&nbsp;covering climate-related strategies, investments, metrics, targets, performance, cash flows, scenarios, climate transition plans and science-based taxonomies.<strong>&nbsp;How any of this massive effort relates to corporate performance for shareholders is not addressed.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Looking to the future, the<strong>&nbsp;Law Initiative<\/strong>&nbsp;suggests the CSA should also begin thinking about&nbsp;<strong>requiring future reports&nbsp; related to a corporation\u2019s \u201crelationship<\/strong>&nbsp;to terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats, ecosystems and populations of related fauna and flora species, including diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems, and their interrelation with Indigenous and affected communities.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Internationally, Canada must also deal with the\u00a0<strong>uncertainty surrounding the differing emerging global standards<\/strong>, including the still-to-be-determined U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) approach to sustainable development.
