The Royal Navy is considering introducing compulsory climate change courses for all sailors, The Telegraph can reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A leaked briefing paper suggests that all Navy personnel could be forced to attend online training sessions about the impact of climate change on defence. The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile this course is not yet mandated, it does provide a comprehensive overview on the science behind climate change and most importantly its relevance to defence,\u201d the paper reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document, published last autumn, reveals that the Navy\u2019s climate change and sustainability unit is \u201cexploring opportunities\u201d to pay for sailors to study postgraduate courses on global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environmental scientists could also be given berths on board Britain\u2019s warships to conduct research, the paper says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are developing relationships with universities to offer enduring opportunities to use Royal Navy platforms for their research, such as this December\u2019s deployment in HMS Protector with scientists from Portsmouth University onboard,\u201d it reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, told The Telegraph that he supported the proposals \u201cas long as one does not go stupid\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClimate change is not more important than fighting the King\u2019s enemies, so it has to be done with a balance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Get a grip\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Andrew Montford, director of the Net Zero Watch think tank, said Grant Shapps, the Defence Secretary, \u201cneeds to get a grip\u201d on the proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNet zero zealots will sacrifice anything and everything to their irrational faith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEconomic security and energy security have already been tossed aside, so it\u2019s no surprise to see national security taking a back seat as well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The currently optional \u201cclimate change and security awareness\u201d course is hosted on the Navy\u2019s online learning platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Armed Forces will have to hit net zero by 2050 as part of the Government\u2019s broader commitment to the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Navy has previously said it will paint ships with \u201cenvironmentally friendly\u201d paint, roll out solar power and use more electric vehicles to cut its emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018In December 2022, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, then chief of the defence staff, said melting ice caps will enable China\u2019s military forces to \u201creach into the Atlantic\u201d in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The month previously, Lt Gen Richard Nugee, then climate tsar at the Ministry of Defence, added that some warships could be left unable to operate if warming sea temperatures get too high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
