class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric cars cannot be advertised as completely \u201czero emission\u201d because of the carbon dioxide that is generated when they are made and charged, the advertising watchdog has declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a ruling that will change how electric\u00a0vehicles\u00a0(EVs) are promoted, the Advertising Standards Authority has banned carmakers from referring to them as zero emission unless they make clear this is only while driving.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/02\/07\/electric-cars-are-not-zero-emission-advertising-watchdog\">The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision emerged as the regulator criticised BMW for describing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/08\/01\/electric-cars-will-cost-more-to-make-bmw-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">its range of EVs<\/a>&nbsp;as \u201czero emission cars\u201d in Google searches.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the ruling, the ASA said: \u201cWe understood that when electric vehicles were driven no emissions were produced, unlike a car with a petrol or diesel engine where emissions came from the tailpipe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHowever, in other circumstances, such as the manufacture or charging of an electric vehicle using electricity from the national grid, emissions were generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor that reason an ad that featured a \u201czero emissions\u201d claim, that did not make explicitly clear that it was related to the reaction of the vehicle while it was being driven was likely to mislead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is understood to be the first time the ASA has issued such a ruling on cars and comes amid a crackdown by the regulator on so-called greenwashing, where companies\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/environment\/0\/great-eco-friendly-con-companies-misleading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over-promote their eco credentials.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the ASA\u2019s stance appears&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/02\/02\/west-humiliating-electric-car-climbdown-begun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at odds with that of the Government<\/a>, which is calling battery-powered EVs \u201czero emission vehicles\u201d for the purposes of the newly introduced ZEV mandate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mandate requires carmakers to make EVs an ever-bigger proportion of their sales, rising steadily from 22pc this year to 80pc by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With manufacturers under pressure to sell ever-high numbers of EVs, the ASA\u2019s ruling&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2024\/02\/05\/electric-cars-ev-demand-tumbles-backlash-high-prices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will be a fresh headache.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While a typical battery EV creates no emissions at the tailpipe while&nbsp;driving, carbon dioxide (CO2) is generated if they are charged from Britain\u2019s power&nbsp;grid because of its heavy reliance&nbsp;on gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile around eight tonnes of CO2 equivalent is generated when an EV is manufactured, according to the International Energy Agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That includes 1.4 tonnes related to the battery\u2019s critical minerals, 1.2 tonnes during the battery\u2019s assembly and then another 5.4 tonnes when the full vehicle is manufactured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>Read the full story <a
