class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These days electrical grid managers are shocked and sounding alarms, not about climate itself, but about dangerous energy policies by ignorant politicians rendering the grid unstable and supply unpredictable.&nbsp; For example today\u2019s Just The News article&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/energy\/energy-analysts-say-perverse-incentives-drive-coal-plant-shutdowns-and-over\"><strong>Analysts: \u2018Irrational\u2019 policies drive coal plant shutdowns, incentivize overbuilding wind farms.<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp; Excerpts in italics with my bolds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission<\/strong>&nbsp;told the utility that the&nbsp;<strong>\u201cpremature closure of these [coal] plants adds to the uncertainty of electrical generation resource adequacy<\/strong>&nbsp;in the upper Midwest.\u201d Some energy experts call&nbsp;<strong>the government\u2019s policies \u201cirrational.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Despite ongoing warnings that the<strong>&nbsp;electricity grid of the United States is becoming increasingly unstable,<\/strong>&nbsp;a major utility is moving forward with the<strong>&nbsp;elimination of two major coal-fired power plants<\/strong>&nbsp;in the upper Midwest. Energy analysts say the&nbsp;<strong>instability is a byproduct<\/strong>&nbsp;of the shutdown of reliable generation sources.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In its latest assessment, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerc.com\/Pages\/default.aspx\">North American Electric Reliability Corporation<\/a>, a grid watchdog, warned that&nbsp;<strong>the MISO region<\/strong>&nbsp;is under some of the<strong>&nbsp;highest risks for resource inadequacy<\/strong>, which means that during peak demand periods,<strong>&nbsp;rolling blackouts<\/strong>&nbsp;are a possibility. Xcel Energy,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/energynews.us\/2024\/01\/22\/xcel-energy-proposes-time-of-use-rates-as-the-default-option-for-minnesota-customers\">according to the Energy News Network<\/a>, is even looking at variable rates to encourage customers to conserve energy and use it during off-peak periods.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois and Nebraska have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cesa.org\/projects\/100-clean-energy-collaborative\/guide\/table-of-100-clean-energy-states\/\">all set&nbsp;<strong>goals to decarbonize their grid<\/strong>&nbsp;by 2040 or 2050<\/a>, which will mean&nbsp;<strong>eliminating coal-fired power plants entirely.<\/strong>&nbsp;These goals are on top of federal green energy mandates.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Public is Blissfully Unaware\u2013That Needs to Change<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some years ago, a weekly news program aired in the Netherlands on the subject Green Electrical Shocks. It employed images and humor to reveal electrical realities to an audience burdened with misconceptions.\u00a0 The video clip is below with English subtitles. Oh, 69%!<\/em><br><em>So we are very average, and in a good way, because the climate is very important.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Let me ask: Green electricity comes from . . .?<\/em><br><em>Yes, electricity produced from windmills and solar panels.<\/em><br><strong><em>Nearly 2\/3 of the Dutch are using it. That\u2019s the image.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Well I have&nbsp;<strong>green news and bad news.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>The green news: Well done!<\/em><br><em>The bad news: It is all one big lie.<\/em><br><strong><em>Time for the Green Electrical Shocks.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Shock #1: The green electricity from your socket is not green.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>When I switched to green electricity I was very proud.<\/em><br><em>I thought, Yes, well done! The climate is getting warmer, but not any more thanks to me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Well, that turned out to be untrue.<\/em><br><em>All producers deliver to one communal grid.\u00a0<strong>Green and grey electricity all mix.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>The electricity you use is always a mix of various sources.<\/em><br><em>OK. It actually makes sense not to have separate green and grey cables for every house.<\/em><br><em>So it means that of all electricity, 69% is produced in a sustainable way. Our grey electricity is green.<\/strong><\/em><br><strong><em>Only one country has produced green electricity: Norway.<\/em><\/strong><br><em><strong>But two countries take the credit<\/strong>.<\/em><br><em>Norway, because they produce green electricity, and the Netherlands because, on paper, we have green electricity. Get it? That\u2019s a nice deal.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>More and more countries sell those certificates. Italy is now the top supplier.<\/em><br><strong><em>We buy fake green electricity from Italy, like some kind of Karma ham.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now, let\u2019s look again at the green electricity we all think we use.<\/em><br><em>So the real picture isn\u2019t 69%.<strong>\u00a0If you cancel the certificates, only 21% of electricity is really green.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>Nowadays you can even order it separately if you don\u2019t want to be part of that Norway certificates scam.<\/em><br><em>You may think: 21% green is still quite a lot. According to the CBS we are using more sun and wind energy, but most of the green energy is produced by the burning of biomass.<\/em><br><em>Ah,&nbsp;<strong>more than half of the 6% green energy is biomass.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ridiculous. What is biomass really? It is organic materials that we encounter every day.<\/em><br><em>Like the content of a compost heap. How about maize leaves or hay?<\/em><br><em>The idea behind burning organic materials is that it will grow up again.<\/em><br><em>So CO2 is released when you burn it, but it will be absorbed again by new trees.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>However, there is one&nbsp;<strong>problem. The forest grows very slowly and our power plants burn very fast.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>This is the fatal flaw in the thinking about biomass. Power plants burn trees too fast, so my solution: slow fire. Disadvantage: it doesn\u2019t exist. So this is our next shock.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Shock#5: Biomass isn\u2019t all that sustainable.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>It\u2019s getting worse. There aren\u2019t enough trees in the Netherlands for biomass.<\/em><br><em>We can\u2019t do it on our own. Netherlands and end up in the ovens of the coal plants.<\/em><\/strong><br><em>It\u2019s a disaster for the American forests, according to environmental groups.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>So we transport American forests on diesel ships to Europe.<\/em><br><em>Then throw them in the oven because it officially counts as green energy.<\/em><br><em>Only because<strong>&nbsp;the CO2 released this way doesn\u2019t count for our total emissions.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>In reality biomass emits more CO2 than natural gas and coal.<\/em><\/strong><br><em>These are laws of nature, no matter what European laws say.<\/em><br><em>At the bottom line, how much sustainable energy do we really have in the Netherlands?<\/em><br><em>Well, the only\u00a0<strong>real green energy from windmills, solar panels etc. Is only 2.2%. of all the energy we use.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div 2.2.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Instead of making a serious attempt to save the climate, they are only working on&nbsp;<strong>accounting tricks, like buying pieces of paper in Norway and burning American forests.<\/strong><\/em><br><em>They are only saving the climate on paper.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Summary The second part rests on impact studies from billions of research dollars spent uncovering any and all possible negatives from warming. And the third leg is climate policies showing how governments can \u201cfight climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is refreshing to see more and more articles by people reasoning about climate change\/global warming and expressing rational positions.
