href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/health-fitness\/body\/dangers-e-bikes-should-know-safe\/\">Electric bikes,&nbsp;<\/a>seen as a solution for tackling climate change, have caused a record number of fires in New York City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to figures released by the New York Fire Department to Fox News, e-bikes \u2013\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/cars\/features\/hidden-explosives-tech-ebikes-lithium-battery-house-fires\/\">powered by lithium-ion batteries\u00a0<\/a>\u2013 were responsible for 267 fires in the city. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2024\/01\/21\/electric-bikes-start-record-number-of-fires-in-new-york\/\">The Telegraph<\/a> has the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They claimed 18 lives and caused 150 injuries, with fatalities increasing 200 per cent in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The latest figures show that sales of e-bikes in the US increased by 269 per cent between 2019 and 2022. It is estimated that the market was worth $2.59 (\u00a32bn) billion by the end of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They have been seen as a way of decarbonising the US and Democratic members of Congress have sponsored legislation which would subsidise their purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most states in the US allow anyone above the age of 16 to ride e-bikes, which can be bought for around $1.600 (\u00a31,260).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safety experts have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/columnists\/2023\/06\/19\/e-bike-dangerous-pedestrians-nearly-killed-bicycles\/\">warned of the dangers<\/a>\u00a0posed by the lithium-ion batteries which can enter an uncontrollable self-heating state and explode.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their dangers were highlighted by New York City mayor, Eric Adams, in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs we rely more and more on micro mobility vehicles to earn a living in our daily lives, we&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/columnists\/2023\/07\/13\/e-bike-batteries-fire-hazard\/\">increase the risk of fires<\/a>&nbsp;caused by lithium-ion batteries,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had over 100 deaths in this city alone on these batteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd one of the problems that we\u2019ve noticed, when you look at those taped-up batteries, you see that they are refurbished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese shops are going inside attempting to refurbish the batteries and do it their own way.
