In draconian style, last February, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.drive.com.au\/news\/europe-2035-ban-new-petrol-diesel-cars\/\">EU declared all petrol and diesel cars would be banned from 203<\/a>5. It was their star policy for the Net Zero push. Car makers would have to cut their emissions by a shocking 55% by 2030 and an unthinkable 100% by 2035. It was to be the end of an era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea was so big and embedded in the EU that only one month ago&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/joannenova.com.au\/2023\/12\/big-car-data-insurance-insider-warns-they-want-to-force-you-into-an-ev-ban-insurance-for-petrol-cars-and-track-you\/\">an insurance insider warned that his company was already devising elaborate plans for a world where everyone had an EV&nbsp;<\/a>and the insurance giants and the government got access to all your data. Police would be issuing your speeding tickets while-you-drove, and insurance companies would be granting drivers a discount if they allowed them to sell all their data to the highest bidder. Indeed, the word was that insurance companies wouldn\u2019t even insure petrol cars. Obviously only the rich were going to be able to afford a petrol car or an EV \u201cwith privacy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now, the largest party in the EU is drafting a policy to ditch the same ban they voted in a year ago. The European People\u2019s Party (EPP) is theoretically a \u201ccentre right\u201d party, despite acting like the radical left, but that means they stand to lose their voter-base in a blink as the reality of the bans sinks in, which it has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Europe\u2019s conservative bloc&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/european-peoples-party-car-engines-border-guards-climate-security\/\">calls for dropping ban on car engines<\/a>, tripling border guards<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nicolas Vincur and Mari Eccles,&nbsp;<em>Politico<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">BRUSSELS \u2014 Europe\u2019s biggest conservative force, the European People\u2019s Party, wants to massively bulk up the EU\u2019s external guard force and drop plans to phase out the combustion engine across the bloc by 2035, according to a draft of the party\u2019s manifesto obtained by POLITICO. The European Commission president&nbsp;Mrs von der Leyen is as green as they come, but decided maybe wolves don\u2019t need so much protection after one of them killed Dolly, her beloved horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By sheer coincidence the next EU elections are in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mass farmers protests and electoral shocks in the Netherlands are making their marks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cNet Zero is now a toxic vote loser\u201d<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ralph Schoellhammer wonders if the whole Net Zero plan will be next as right wing parties realize how much traction they can get by attacking climate policies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/european-union-dropping-net-zero\/\">Is the EU dropping Net Zero?<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The European Right has discovered anger against Net Zero policies as a powerful theme for mobilising disenchanted voters, as demonstrated by farmer protests in countries such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/the-dutch-farmers-party-victory-is-a-warning-to-the-green-movement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Netherlands<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/why-germanys-farmer-protests-are-so-unusual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Germany<\/a>. A number of parties across the continent, from the Austrian FP\u00d6 to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/thepost\/votes-flock-to-the-afd-in-search-of-energy-realism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">German AfD<\/a>&nbsp;and the RN in France, have been quick to make this a main campaign issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was once&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/green-parties-struggle-gain-electoral-climate-traction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an issue<\/a>&nbsp;for left-of-centre parties to win over voters has now become a toxic vote-loser. This shift shouldn\u2019t surprise us: Europeans support taking action on climate change \u2014 just so long as it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/may\/02\/many-europeans-want-climate-action-but-less-so-if-it-changes-their-lifestyle-shows-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">doesn\u2019t affect<\/a>&nbsp;their lifestyles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once it becomes clear that reducing emissions comes at a significant cost, support for corresponding policies falls dramatically. The German example of the last two years has shown that the green transition is not leading to more jobs and prosperity, but instead the opposite.
