And how is it different from weather?<\/strong>&nbsp;Deutsche Welle (DW)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why is it so cold in the UK right now \u2013 and how long will Arctic chill last?<\/strong>&nbsp;The Guardian<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Extreme cold still happens in a warming world \u2013 in fact climate instability may be disrupting the polar vortex,<\/strong>&nbsp;Yahoo News<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1.&nbsp; Cold is Weather, Not Climate<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the reassurances are the familiar refrain that cold is weather, while warming is forever.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rclutz.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/01\/alaska-2019-and-2020.gif?w=723\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13191\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rclutz.files.wordpress.com\/2020\/01\/alaska-2019-and-2020.gif\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2.&nbsp; CO2 Causes Extreme Weather of All Kinds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others claim that rising CO2 causes all kinds of extreme weather, including big chills.&nbsp; Actually, those stories are way out on a limb, contrary to what IPCC itself says.&nbsp; Roger Pielke Jr. explains at his substack page&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/what-the-ipcc-actually-says-about\"><strong>What the IPCC Actually Says About Extreme Weather.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<strong>I promise, you\u2019ll be utterly shocked.<\/strong>&nbsp;Excerpts in italics with my bolds and added images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Back to extreme weather \u2014 let\u2019s take a look what IPCC AR6 says about the time of emergence for various extreme events. Here are some direct quotes related to specific phenomena:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>An\u00a0<strong>increase in heat extremes<\/strong>\u00a0has emerged or will emerge in the coming three decades in most land regions (<strong>high confidence<\/strong>)<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>There is\u00a0<strong>low confidence<\/strong>\u00a0in the emergence of\u00a0<strong>heavy precipitation<\/strong>\u00a0and pluvial and river flood frequency in observations, despite trends that have been found in a few regions<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>There is<strong>\u00a0low confidence<\/strong>\u00a0in the emergence of\u00a0<strong>drought frequency<\/strong>\u00a0in observations, for any type of drought, in all regions.<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Observed mean<strong>\u00a0surface wind speed trends<\/strong>\u00a0are present in many areas, but the emergence of these trends from the interannual natural variability and their attribution to human-induced climate change remains of\u00a0<strong>low confidence<\/strong>\u00a0due to various factors such as changes in the type and exposure of recording instruments, and their relation to climate change is not established. . . The same limitation\u00a0<strong>also holds for wind extremes<\/strong>\u00a0(severe storms, tropical cyclones, sand and dust storms).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The IPCC helpfully provides a summary table for a range of extremes, indicating for various phenomena whether emergence has been achieved with medium or high confidence at three points in time:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>to date (today), i.e., specifically when IPCC AR6 was completed in 2021,<\/em><br><em>by 2050 under RCP8.5\/SSP5-8.5, and<\/em><br><em>by 2100 under RCP8.5\/SSP5-8.5.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Those three dates are displayed as the 3 right-most column in the table below.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A&nbsp;<strong>white entry<\/strong>&nbsp;in the table means that emergence has&nbsp;<strong>not yet<\/strong>&nbsp;been&nbsp;<strong>or<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;<strong>not in the future expected<\/strong>&nbsp;to be achieved. The blue and orange entries represent the emergence of respectively increasing and decreasing signals at various levels of confidence.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Take a moment and look at the table carefully. It may also help to explain&nbsp;<strong>why a recent paper<\/strong>&nbsp;that arrives at conclusions perfectly&nbsp;<strong>consistent with the IPCC&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/think-of-the-implications-of-publishing\">is now being retracted<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;with no claims of error or misconduct.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3.&nbsp;
