January 2024<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Disconnected from reality: Despite heavy winter rains, flooding and DWD data, Germany\u2019s Helmholtz Institute insists parts of Germany are \u201cextremely dry\u201d.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/klimanachrichten.de\/2024\/01\/09\/die-klimawandelbedingte-duerre-im-boden-im-januar-2024\/\">The \u201cclimate change-induced drought\u201d in January 2024<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>By Frank Bosse<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already reported several times (<a href=\"https:\/\/klimanachrichten.de\/2023\/11\/01\/der-schwachsinn-des-helmholtz-duerremonitors\/\">here<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/klimanachrichten.de\/2023\/11\/29\/helmholtz-duerremonitor-revisited\/\">here<\/a>) on the Helmholtz Institute\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ufz.de\/index.php?de=37937\">Drought Monitor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, there have been major floods, especially in north-western Germany, and also a lot of precipitation elsewhere. In Saxony, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwd.de\/DE\/leistungen\/zeitreihen\/zeitreihen.html#buehneTop\">DWD<\/a>&nbsp;German national weather service recorded some 107 mm of precipitation in December, 2023, which is 78% more than the long-term mean. There was also an increase of 10% over the whole 2023 year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s take a look at the drought monitor in the region and, as of January 5, 2024, it still shows areas in northeastern Saxony with extreme (dark red) and exceptional drought (red) in the total soil to a depth of 1.80 m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have compared this in detail with the soil profiles\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwd.de\/DE\/fachnutzer\/landwirtschaft\/appl\/bf_view\/_node.html\">available from the DWD<\/a>, up to January 5, 2024. Clearly the DWD results are contrary to the Helmholtz Frought Monitir depiction, which by the way is based on models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the top left near Elsterheide, the Helmholtz Drought Monitor shows \u201cextreme drought\u201d of the entire soil as of January 5, 2024 and the corresponding DWD profile reveals 90-100% moisture penetration throughout. At Boxberg (top right), down to 1.3m is over 90% moisture, between 40 and 100 cm depth there is oversaturation, below 130 cm down to a depth of 2m there is still 50-60%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is this what \u201cextreme drought\u201d looks like, according to Helmholtz?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Neisse floodplain (bottom right) tops it all off: Helmholtz also indicates \u201cextreme drought\u201d here. But the DWD shows there\u2019s 100% moisture in the soil profile down to a depth of 1.8 m. Between 80 cm and 140 cm, the soil is in fact saturated with water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If drought is understood as a lack of water, then the \u201cDrought Monitor\u201d must be representing something else!
