But a quick review of last year\u2019s horror show of EV fire incidents suggests my assessment may have been premature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>EV fires remind industry of associated risk<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:teresa@repairerdrivenews.com\">Teresa Moss<\/a>&nbsp;on&nbsp;January 5, 2024<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.repairerdrivennews.com\/category\/insurance\/\">Insurance<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicles (EVs) appear to have caused multiple fires at manufacturing factories in recent months, sparking a reminder about EV safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most recently, the Detroit Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire involving lithium-ion batteries at General Motors\u2019 Factory Zero last month,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/money\/cars\/general-motors\/2023\/12\/20\/gm-factory-zero-fire-investigation-detroit-hamtramck-restart-production\/71984134007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Detroit Free Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur initial investigation indicates a forklift accidentally punctured a container with battery materials, causing the fire,\u201d Tara Stewart Kuhnen, GM spokeswoman, said in an email Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newspaper&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/money\/cars\/general-motors\/2023\/12\/20\/gm-factory-zero-fire-investigation-detroit-hamtramck-restart-production\/71984134007\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">also reported<\/a>&nbsp;another fire at the property in October that involved an autonomous electric car. The theory was quickly doused by the Bedfordshire fire service, which said the blaze appeared to have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2023\/oct\/10\/huge-fire-breaks-out-at-luton-airport-car-park\">started in a diesel car<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the rumour refused to be quelled, spreading on social media like, well, wildfire. Even when these stories are patiently debunked, they come back as zombie myths that refuse to die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Electric vehicles (EVs)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/jun\/08\/fact-check-why-rowan-atkinson-is-wrong-about-electric-vehicles\">will not deliver the environment<\/a>&nbsp;from damage but international climate forecasters agree they are a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/sep\/26\/staggering-green-growth-gives-hope-for-15c-says-global-energy-head\">crucial part of the transition from fossil fuels<\/a>. The Australian maritime authority in 2023 warned ferries about the danger of EVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>DCV Safety Alert 02\/2023 \u2013 Risks Associated with the Carriage of Battery Electric Vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This safety alert aims to raise awareness of the risks involved with the carriage of battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) on roll-on, roll-off (RORO) ferries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Purpose<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This safety alert provides guidance to operators of domestic commercial vessels (DCVs) on risks associated with the carriage of battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) on roll-on, roll-off (RORO) ferries, and how best to deal with these risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Risk assessment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As per Marine Order 504 (Certificates of operation and operation requirements) you must conduct a risk assessment for your vessel to ensure that risks arising from the carriage of BEVs are addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consideration must be given to the hazards arising from transporting BEVs and a vessel specific procedure developed for the prevention and mitigation of fire incidents involving BEVs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>New risks identified in relation to BEVs<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some risks associated with BEV fires onboard DCVs include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High voltage shocks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Direct jet flames<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fires develop in intensity quickly and rapidly reach their maximum intensity (typically within 2-3 minutes)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Toxic gases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gas explosion (if the released gas accumulates for a while before being ignited)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Long lasting re-ignition risk (can ignite or re-ignite weeks, or maybe months after the provoking incident)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once established fires are difficult to stop\/extinguish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thermal runaway<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026Read more:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amsa.gov.au\/vessels-operators\/domestic-commercial-vessels\/dcv-safety-alert-022023-risks-associated-carriage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.amsa.gov.au\/vessels-operators\/domestic-commercial-vessels\/dcv-safety-alert-022023-risks-associated-carriage<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EVs seem to pose a particular problem for ships. Ships have been destroyed by uncontrollable EV fires \u2013 automatic fire suppression systems which work on gasoline and diesel fires are helpless to extinguish EV fires, as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2022\/02\/18\/was-the-felicity-ace-fire-caused-by-electric-vehicle-batteries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Felicity Ace discovered in 2022<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2024\/01\/01\/cargo-ship-carrying-burning-lithium-ion-batteries-reaches-alaska-but-kept-offshore-for-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genius Star XI fire lithium battery fire<\/a>&nbsp;was somehow brought under control in the last week, the ship is currently&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gcaptain.com\/genius-star-xi-fire-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anchored near Dutch Harbour, Alaska<\/a>, though the ship is still subject to a one mile safety exclusion zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I once survived a vehicle fire, caused by a gasoline tank leak. The vehicle was a write-off, but the intensity of the fire was nothing like some of the EV fires we\u2019ve seen. I was first alerted to the fire by other drivers, I had time to pull over, and after I pulled over I had a good 90 seconds to get out of the vehicle before the cabin started filling with smoke. It wasn\u2019t obvious the vehicle would be a write-off until the fire had been burning for 5 minutes, and the intensity finally grew to the point it was obvious the vehicle would be destroyed. Even so, I retrieved an old plastic Apple MacBook from the trunk of the vehicle. After drying the laptop for a few months, I managed to get it to boot long enough to rescue files I hadn\u2019t backed up (lesson learned).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, the laptop may have been protected a little by some bottled water we had in the trunk, but I doubt a few bottles of water would have saved my laptop from an EV fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare this experience to a small electric vehicle fire.
