winds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As many in the media have done, the Mirror lazily labelled 94 mph winds \u201cpummelling\u201d the UK, even though that those winds only occurred on the Needles. The worst affected area appears to have been the Southwest and Midlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.metoffice.gov.uk\/hadobs\/hadukp\/data\/download.html\">England &amp; Wales Precipitation Series<\/a>, 23mm fell in the Southwest on the 1st, and a further 17mm on the 2nd. In the Midlands, the numbers were 13mm and 18mm. Rainfall totals for the 3rd, by the way, were negligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, the ground everywhere was very wet, following a wet December. But that had not been an unusually wet month, with 145 mm. The December rainfall data also gives the lie to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/tyne-tees\/2024-01-04\/flooding-in-york-as-river-levels-peak-with-flood-warnings-still-in-place\">ITV\u2019s<\/a>&nbsp;claim that it is all to do with climate change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Henk is the eighth named storm to have hit the country this winter and the pattern is likely to continue due to the effects of climate change.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;This is climate change and the impacts we are seeing,&#8221; Mr Paggett added. &#8220;We are seeing these increasingly wet and blustery winters. We are seeing storm upon storm which is exacerbating the issues.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quite what relevance the \u201ceighth named storm\u201d has to do with anything is a mystery.
