The shutdown of the plants will begin in 2027, and their deconstruction \u2014 which is estimated to cost 20.2 billion euros, or $22.4 billion \u2014 will be paid for by the plants&#8217; operators, according to government officials. The <a href=\"http:\/\/Washington Examiner\">Washington Examiner<\/a> has the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain\u2019s nuclear fleet consists of seven operating reactors, generating about a fifth of its electricity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spain joins other nations, such as\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/germany\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Germany\u00a0<\/a>and Switzerland<\/em><\/strong>, in pledging to move away from nuclear power. Earlier this year, Germany closed down its last three remaining power plants after promising more than a decade ago to phase out nuclear energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, Switzerland voted to leave nuclear power behind but didn\u2019t set a concrete deadline to shut down its remaining plants.
