class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Biden administration unveiled eligibility guidelines Friday for \u201csustainable aviation fuel\u201d (SAF) subsidies, which stand as a victory for the powerful corn lobby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Treasury Department\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/news\/press-releases\/jy1998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">released<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-drop\/n-24-06.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">guidelines<\/a>, which would allow biofuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% as determined by the federal \u201cGREET\u201d model to qualify for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2023\/08\/11\/joe-biden-inflation-reduction-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>\u00a0(IRA) tax credits. The ethanol and corn lobbies pushed hard for the guidelines to accept \u201cGREET\u201d as a model for determining eligibility, as it makes it easier for corn-based ethanol to be considered sufficiently \u201ceco-friendly\u201d as opposed to other frameworks,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/4361322-alternative-aviation-fuel-credit-guidance-issued-by-biden-administration-bolsters-ethanol-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to The Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notably, the federal government is planning to update the \u201cGREET\u201d model sometime by March 2024, according to the Treasury Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Biden administration is aiming for SAFs to meet 100% of the country\u2019s annual aviation fuel demand \u2014 a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/bioenergy\/articles\/sustainable-aviation-fuels-low-carbon-ethanol-production\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">projected<\/a>\u00a035 billion gallons \u2014 by 2050, an effort intended to protect the environment and counter climate change. That dynamic could have several impacts, including adding strain on groundwater aquifers in the heartland and increasing food costs for American consumers,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.farmaid.org\/blog\/askfarmaid\/does-corn-and-ethanol-effect-my-food-prices\/#:~:text=So%20ethanol%20production%20has%20led,eggs%2C%20and%20dairy%20to%20rise.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a>&nbsp;to Farm Aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Increased reliance on corn-based ethanol aviation fuel \u201cis not going to do much for global warming, but it will do quite a lot to benefit the renewable fuel industry and it will also indirectly benefit corn prices,\u201d Prof. C.
