president-elect\u2019s pledge to take a chainsaw to public spending.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Javier Milei<\/strong>, who\u00a0describes global warming as \u201canother socialist hoax\u201d,<\/strong>\u00a0assumes office on December 10 as the 2023 UN Climate Conference draws to a close in Dubai.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Milei\u2019s 56 per cent to 44 per cent win over Peronist<\/strong> candidate Sergio Massa appears to have caught left-wing establishments on the hop<\/strong>. For the rest of us, it has reinforced the impression that COP 28 is being held in a bubble.<\/strong> In the real world, the political tide is moving forcefully in the opposite direction.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milei intends to close the country\u2019s leading science agency,<\/strong> the National Scientific and Technical Research Council, raising the prospect that the 12,000 bureaucrats and researchers<\/strong> it employs could join<\/strong> the 40 per cent of Argentinians below the poverty line.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matilde Rusticucci, an atmospheric scientist<\/strong> at the University of Buenos Aires, told Nature<\/strong> Milei would give industry the green light to pollute rivers \u201cas much as they want to\u201d and claims<\/strong> members of his party, La Libertad Avanza, support privatising the high seas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMilei is denying the value of science, denying the value of the environment, denying climate change,\u201d Rusticucci says. \u201cHis government will be a massive setback for the entire scientific community.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the minds of the global intelligentsia,<\/strong>\u00a0Milei is Argentina\u2019s Donald Trump, one of\u00a0a growing number of dinosaurs from the imagined far right,<\/strong>\u00a0roaming the Earth and\u00a0winning free and fair elections<\/strong>\u00a0seemingly at will. Their attempt to dignify their criticism of Milei as a threat to the planet cannot disguise a\u00a0greater fear: the threat to their comfortable, state-funded jobs<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The chronic collapse of the country\u2019s economy is but a footnote
in The Guardian\u2019s coverage of the election.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inflation has risen to 143 per cent under Massa\u2019s watch as economics minister,<\/strong> cutting the value of wages by a third. Yet the sobering economic figures have neither weakened the Peronistas\u2019 conviction<\/strong> that their big-government<\/strong> instincts are correct, nor dulled their belief in the rank stupidity of ordinary Argentinians.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How could these people not see their problems would be solved by more currency controls, welfare and generous funding for the arts? Do they not understand the full employment of sustainability consultants, mime artists and central bankers is good for everyone?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other side of the Atlantic, commentators have been tweeting like a tree full of galahs since Geert Wilder\u2019s PPV won<\/strong> the popular vote in the recent Dutch election<\/strong>. Almost every woke trope has been used<\/strong> to condemn the revival of Wilder\u2019s fortunes. In their world, it is the beginning of the end for racial harmony, democracy and the planet.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis outcome will likely mean a rollback of climate measures, new fossil investments, exclusion of marginalised groups, and more,\u201d\u00a0Extinction Rebellion Netherlands<\/strong>\u00a0told Euronews.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

A Wilders government would herald \u201cfour years of climate change denial, exclusion and a breakdown of the rule of law\u201d, predicted\u00a0Friends of the Earth Netherlands<\/strong>. The comfortable\u00a0progressive left<\/strong>\u00a0has seldom appeared less comfortable\u00a0in the face of rising contempt for its failing technocratic vision.<\/strong>\u00a0Yet only one governing coalition in Western Europe,\u00a0Giorgia Meloni\u2019s Italian coalition, is drawn exclusively from parties on the right.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anti-elitism has gone mainstream. Many European governments despised
by the intelligentsia are coalitions led by parties of the left or centre right.<\/mark><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Foco<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Like Slovakia\u2019s new Prime Minister, Robert Foco,<\/strong> a former member of the Communist Party, they have registered the change in the wind and entered into alliances with nationalist parties.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sweden\u2019s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, leader of the Moderate Party,<\/strong>\u00a0is challenging the woke agenda purely out of pragmatism. He has engineered a historic shift towards nuclear power and toughened internal checks on migrants, much to the disgust of the elite.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green Party leader Per Bolund said the incoming government\u2019s policies were \u201cauthoritarian, conservative and nationalistic\u201d, bringing to an end eight years of a centre-left government led by the Social Democrats.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The insurrections against the global intelligentsia are neither planned nor co-ordinated.<\/strong> There are common themes of nationalism, but no consistent ideology. The movements, on the whole, are not particularly well-organised or well-funded; their energy and direction come from the grassroots.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, the growing feeling of impotence among the intelligentsia<\/strong> as they stand armed with soft mallets playing a game of political whack-a-mole,<\/strong> uncertain where the next cartoonish pest will pop up and unsure of their ability to squash it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Worse news might lie ahead for the European elites.<\/strong>\u00a0The dinosaurs could be on the verge of achieving an outright majority in the\u00a0European parliament,<\/strong>\u00a0once the bastion of supranational, technocratic politicians are relieved of the pressure of chasing the popular vote.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Climate Action Network<\/strong> has set out the political fault lines in Strasbourg and Brussels, based on the signature woke issue of the climate emergency. ECAN classifies the eight political groupings as defenders, delayers or dinosaurs.<\/strong> The defenders, from the progressive socialist and green alliances<\/strong>, hold 250 votes<\/strong> in the 750-seat current parliament.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dinosaurs, primarily conservatives, hold 304.<\/strong> The delayers, predominantly social democrats, have the balance of power with 101 seats. Non-Inscrits, or independents, make up the rest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A net dinosaur gain of 72 seats may be too much to hope for at next June\u2019s election. Yet the appetite for radical climate action among the delayers is weakening as Europe\u2019s energy crisis bites<\/strong>, and popular discontent against mandating<\/strong> electric vehicles, de-stocking farms, the loss of jobs in heavy manufacturing and processing, and rising electricity prices add momentum.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seems doubtful that an\u00a0Australian<\/strong>\u00a0government, led by a\u00a0self-styled progressive Prime Minister and a cabinet utterly convinced about matters it barely understands<\/strong>, will remain immune from this backlash. Indeed, the dinosaurs, in coalition with the dickheads, have handed the Prime Minister one defeat from which he has barely recovered.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The uprising is getting closer. New Zealand could be the next woke domino to fall,<\/strong> thanks to an unexpectedly united three-way coalition led by the National Party\u2019s Christopher Luxon<\/strong>. Could the mild-mannered former business executive and conservative evangelical<\/strong> break out of his well-tailored suit to bare his scaly limbs and giant claws, ready to rip apart Jacinda Ardern\u2019s limp legacy?<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
