For the rest of us, it has reinforced the impression that<strong>&nbsp;COP 28 is being held in a bubble.<\/strong>&nbsp;In the real world, the political<strong>&nbsp;tide is moving forcefully in the opposite direction.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Milei intends to close the country\u2019s leading science agency,<\/strong>&nbsp;the National Scientific and Technical Research Council, raising the prospect that the&nbsp;<strong>12,000 bureaucrats and researchers<\/strong>&nbsp;it employs could<strong>&nbsp;join<\/strong>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong>40 per cent of Argentinians below the poverty line.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Matilde Rusticucci, an atmospheric scientist<\/strong>&nbsp;at the University of Buenos Aires,&nbsp;<strong>told Nature<\/strong>&nbsp;Milei would give industry the green light to pollute rivers \u201cas much as they want to\u201d and&nbsp;<strong>claims<\/strong>&nbsp;members of his party, La Libertad Avanza, support privatising the high seas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cMilei is denying the value of science, denying the value of the environment, denying climate change,\u201d Rusticucci says. \u201cHis government will be&nbsp;<strong>a massive setback for the entire scientific community.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>In the minds of the global intelligentsia,<\/strong>\u00a0Milei is Argentina\u2019s Donald Trump, one of\u00a0<strong>a growing number of dinosaurs from the imagined far right,<\/strong>\u00a0roaming the Earth and\u00a0<strong>winning free and fair elections<\/strong>\u00a0seemingly at will. Almost&nbsp;<strong>every woke trope has been used<\/strong>&nbsp;to condemn the revival of Wilder\u2019s fortunes. ECAN&nbsp;<strong>classifies the eight political groupings as defenders, delayers or dinosaurs.<\/strong>&nbsp;The defenders, from the&nbsp;<strong>progressive socialist and green alliances<\/strong>, hold&nbsp;<strong>250 votes<\/strong>&nbsp;in the 750-seat current parliament.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>The dinosaurs, primarily conservatives, hold 304.<\/strong>&nbsp;The delayers, predominantly social democrats, have the balance of power with 101 seats. Non-Inscrits, or independents, make up the rest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A net dinosaur gain of 72 seats may be too much to hope for at next June\u2019s election. Yet the&nbsp;<strong>appetite for radical climate action among the delayers is weakening as Europe\u2019s energy crisis bites<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>popular discontent against mandating<\/strong>&nbsp;electric vehicles, de-stocking farms, the loss of jobs in heavy manufacturing and processing, and rising electricity prices add momentum.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It seems doubtful that an\u00a0<strong>Australian<\/strong>\u00a0government, led by a\u00a0<strong>self-styled progressive Prime Minister and a cabinet utterly convinced about matters it barely understands<\/strong>, will remain immune from this backlash.
