The\u00a0<em>Telegraph<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2023\/11\/30\/uae-cop-has-biggest-carbon-footprint-of-any-climate-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This includes 97,000 official delegates, more than double&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/environment\/2021\/10\/21\/cop26-fears-grow-glasgow-climate-change-summit-will-fall-short\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cop26 in Glasgow<\/a>, the previous biggest of the summits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Glasgow summit led to emissions that were equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of around 8,000 British residents, mostly stemming from transport to the conference itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGiven the number of people expected here, yes this probably will have the highest carbon footprint of any Cop to date,\u201d said Richard Black, senior associate of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit think tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the size of that footprint \u201cis absolutely dwarfed by the emission cuts that a deal can produce\u201d and put pressure on the UAE to deliver a good outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo the ball is really at the feet of the UAE \u2013 they\u2019ve chosen to host the biggest Cop in history, now they need to make it have the biggest impact of any Cop in history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attendance at the annual summit has risen steadily in recent years, particularly as the presence of corporations and NGOs has grown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chris Stark, the chief executive of the Climate Change Committee, recently told The Telegraph the conference was \u201ctoo big\u201d and had become more like a trade fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among this year\u2019s attendees, Rishi Sunak, the King, Lord Cameron and US envoy John Kerry will all travel by private jet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spokesman for Cop28 said: \u201cEveryone is welcome at Cop28 because everyone is needed to deliver climate action.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sustainability report produced after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/opinion\/2022\/11\/21\/cop27-lot-hot-air\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">last year\u2019s Cop in Egypt<\/a>, during which the UAE had a record number of delegates, recommended reducing the number of accreditations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UN has also acknowledged the tricky optics of increasing travel to the event. In a guide for host countries titled \u201cHow to Cop\u201d, it says scrutiny has been focused on \u201cthe apparent irony of the GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions generated by thousands of participants flying in from all around the globe to discuss how to reduce GHG emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It adds: \u201cThe conferences generate considerable GHG emissions. Host countries will need to take proactive steps to achieve carbon neutrality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UAE has promised to offset emissions from the event, but will not provide details of exactly how this will be done until after the conclusion of the summit.
