Yes, the President of the United States has pulled out a Korean War authority (Defense Production Act<\/a>) to fight against American energy that Americans prefer<\/strong>. It is an overreach<\/strong> that is being noted widely,<\/strong> as outlined below as well as here<\/a> and here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Gas Association (AGA)<\/strong>\u00a0started this latest flurry with a\u00a0press release<\/strong>\u00a0November 17, 2023.\u00a0The same day, Reuters and Fox News published their articles. Epoch Times published its article (and video) on November 20, 2023. The\u00a0Reuters<\/strong>\u00a0article most noteworthy contribution is that it names recipients\u00a0of<\/strong>\u00a0the Biden Administration\u2019s\u00a0[mis]appropriations of DPA funding.<\/strong>\u00a0Both the Reuters article and Fox News article cite the AGA\u2019s press release.<\/p>\n\n\n

The AHRI data clearly shows that gas appliances are losing<\/strong> at least some ground to electric equivalents<\/strong> as evidenced by the above graphs. Moreover, this trend appears to have accelerated under the Biden Administration.<\/strong> AHRI\u2019s discussion of the IRA and DPA is non-committal advocacy (an oxymoron?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Joe Biden<\/a> allotted $169 million for electric heat pump projects with his emergency authority<\/strong> on the basis of climate change<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the first time a president\u00a0classified climate change as an emergency by utilizing the Defense Production Act,<\/strong>\u00a0which was established during the\u00a0Cold War<\/a>. Now, the\u00a0money<\/strong>\u00a0stemming from the Inflation Reduction Act will be\u00a0divided among 15 sites dedicated to manufacturing<\/strong>\u00a0the necessary parts and entire units of a variety of\u00a0heat pumps<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThe President is using his wartime emergency powers<\/strong> under the Defense Production Act to turbocharge U.S. manufacturing of clean technologies and strengthen our energy security,\u201d Biden\u2019s National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi said in a statement<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

John Podesta,<\/strong>\u00a0senior adviser to the president for clean energy innovation and implementation, similarly celebrated the move,\u00a0applauding the president for \u201ctreating climate change as the crisis it is.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However,\u00a0American Gas Association President and CEO<\/strong>\u00a0Karen Harbert disagreed with the recent move from the White House, writing in a\u00a0statement<\/a><\/strong>, \u201cWe are deeply disappointed to see the Defense Production Act, which is intended as\u00a0a vital tool for advancing national security against serious outside threats, being used<\/strong>\u00a0as an instrument\u00a0to advance a policy agenda contradictory to our nation\u2019s strong energy position.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIncreased use of natural gas<\/strong> has been responsible for 60% of the electrical grid\u2019s CO2 emissions reductions.<\/strong> This vital tool for emissions reductions and energy system resilience should not be unfairly undermined through misuse of the Defense Production Act.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the facilities, two new factories will be constructed<\/strong>: a Treau, Inc. DBA Gradient plant in Michigan and a Mitsubishi Electric plant in Kentucky. Neither<\/strong> company has announced exact locations yet<\/strong>. Treau will receive over $17 million, and Mitsubishi will receive $50 million toward construction.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Energy Department predicts roughly 1,700 jobs will be created in the various projects to promote more heat pump products. All the sites are centered in \u201cdisadvantaged communities\u201d<\/strong> for their benefit.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the Energy Information Administration\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0natural gas was the water and space heating source of about 42% of U.S. residential spaces.<\/strong>\u00a0The residential sector makes up 15% of overall natural gas consumption. However, heating and cooling across residential and commercial buildings drive\u00a0more than 35% of the country\u2019s energy consumption.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Germany\u2019s economy, Europe\u2019s largest, is contracting<\/strong> as surging energy prices and trade tensions cast doubt on its export-oriented business model. Chancellor Olaf Scholz\u2019s government had been counting on that old virtue signaling switcheroo \u2013 a flood of spending on \u201cgreen-energy projects and technology\u201d,<\/strong> from chips to batteries, to revive the old model. That way, if anyone asks why Germany is deficit-spending its way to mercantilist utopia, Berlin could always lie and say it was doing the right thing for the world<\/strong> and wasn\u2019t interested in a debt-funded stimulus. Alas, now the \u201cCardinals of Karlsruhe\u201d have made this impossible.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Berlin\u2019s decision to freeze all federal spending for the rest of the year came after the court defunded the government\u2019s \u20ac60 billion \u2014the equivalent of more than $65 billion\u2014green-transition project.<\/strong> The court said Berlin couldn\u2019t repurpose unspent credits originally earmarked to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic to fund environmental and energy projects. It said Berlin was bound by the country\u2019s constitutionally enshrined fiscal rules that limit budget deficits to 0.35%<\/strong> of gross domestic product in normal times.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Senior government officials said one option<\/strong> under consideration would be to retroactively declare a state of budgetary emergency<\/strong> for 2023, invoking a clause in the fiscal rules that allows for a suspension of the spending limits in exceptional circumstances.<\/strong> Previous governments invoked the exception during the pandemic.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, for Germany\u2019s stimmy-starved politicians, the plan is fraught with legal difficulties, in part because the constitutional court prepared for just this eventuality<\/strong> when it raised the bar for declaring such emergencies, according to Lars Feld, an economist who advises the government.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening resilience and transforming the economy amid geopolitical crises and climate change was seen as a necessity that required taking on debt, but the court ruling has challenged those assumptions,<\/strong> Feld wrote in the Frankfurter Allgemeine newspaper.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hilariously, the court said that unlike war and natural disasters, climate change was a foreseeable crisis that had been long in the making and could no longer justify emergency spending.<\/strong> Which, however, means that all Germany will have to<\/strong> do is politely request that the CIA start a new war\u2026 or that Fauci mail orders a new virus from Wuhan.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
