That makes this year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2023\/11\/16\/polar-bear-sea-ice-habitat-update-at-15-november-problem-bears-in-western-hudson-bay\/\">a bit later than usual<\/a>\u00a0(average is 16 November) but is not one of the extremely late freeze-ups,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polarbearscience.com\/2023\/01\/12\/recent-paper-on-w-hudson-bay-polar-bears-includes-new-official-sea-ice-freeze-up-data\/\">as happened in 1981, 2016 and 2021<\/a>\u00a0when bears didn\u2019t leave until the first week of December (Castro de la Guardia et al. 2017; Miller et al. 2022). Canada<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At 30 November 2023, courtesy\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/ice-forecasts-observations\/latest-conditions.html\">Canadian Ice Services<\/a>\u00a0shows the expanding band of ice developing along the western shore of Hudson Bay but note also that the rest of the Canadian Arctic, as well as the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaufort_Sea\">Beaufort\u00a0<\/a>Sea, is completely covered in ice, as is most of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baffin_Bay\">Baffin
