effectiveness when combined with azithromycin, a common antibiotic.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The Food and Drug Administration&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/coronavirus\/fda-revokes-emergency-approval-hydroxychloroquine\">yanked emergency use authorization from HCQ<\/a>&nbsp;in summer 2020<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>despite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/nation\/science\/concerns-mount-over-hydroxychloroquine-study-caused-who-halt-drug-trials\">The Lancet&nbsp;retracting a study<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;three weeks earlier that linked the antiviral to a higher risk of death from COVID, saying the authors could not \u201cvouch for the veracity\u201d of their data sources.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMe2020822\">New England Journal of Medicine&nbsp;also expressed concerns<\/a>&nbsp;about the data integrity of the same international registry used for&nbsp;The Lancet&nbsp;study, known as Surgisphere, in an NEJM study of COVID risk in cardiovascular patients.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/content.govdelivery.com\/accounts\/USFDA\/bulletins\/378ec97\">The FDA issued a bulletin Wednesday night<\/a>&nbsp;warning of Moderna vaccine overdoses for children,<\/strong>&nbsp;without specifying how widely they were happening.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The agency simply said it had \u201cbecome aware\u201d that some providers didn\u2019t know<strong>&nbsp;the vials contained \u201cnotably more\u201d than the 0.25 milliliter authorized for children through age 11<\/strong>, and \u201csome\u201d may be giving kids the whole vial rather than withdrawing 0.25 mL and discarding the excess.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>An agency spokesperson acknowledged but did not<\/strong>\u00a0answer a\u00a0Just the News\u00a0request to\u00a0<strong>explain why<\/strong>\u00a0it appeared so much more concerned about appropriately dosing class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Last week, Elsevier journal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2052297523001075\">New Microbes and New Infections<\/a>&nbsp;published its second study in a month on&nbsp;<strong>HCQ-azithromycin treatment.<\/strong>&nbsp;The first, by Belgian researchers,&nbsp;<strong>found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/coronavirus\/hydroxychloroquine-plus-common-antibiotic-reduces-covid-mortality\">the combination had a statistically significant advantage over the \u201cstandard of care\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>in 352 hospitalized patients in spring 2020.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>The second study, by French researchers<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/accountability\/cancel-culture\/twitter-censorship-targets-florida-not-fda-advisor-undermining-covid\">formerly censored American cardiologist Peter McCullough<\/a>, looked at a&nbsp;<strong>much larger and more diverse group over a longer window.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Among over&nbsp;<strong>30,000 adults<\/strong>&nbsp;treated as inpatients or outpatients from March 2020 through December 2021 at IHU M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e Infection in&nbsp;<strong>Marseille<\/strong>, about&nbsp;<strong>23,000 received the combination and had a six-week all-cause mortality rate of 0.82%.<\/strong>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<strong>control group<\/strong>&nbsp;of about 7,000 had a rate of&nbsp;<strong>4.89%.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The odds ratio of death following the combination treatment was<strong>&nbsp;0.16, meaning a far lower mortality risk.<\/strong>&nbsp;(An OR above 1 means treatment and death are positively correlated.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The adjusted OR<strong>&nbsp;maxed out at 0.55 after various subsamples<\/strong>&nbsp;considered sex, age, patient management, period, viral variant, vaccination status and comorbidities, they found.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Earlier randomized controlled trials of HCQ<\/strong>&nbsp;likely didn\u2019t show a benefit because many were \u201cpublished or<strong>&nbsp;stopped at an early stage<\/strong>, despite the fact that the calculated sample size of patients had not been achieved,\u201d the paper states.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Yale epidemiologist Harvey Risch<\/strong>, an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/coronavirus\/yale-epidemiologist-says-hydroxychloroquine-key-defeating-covid-19\">early proponent of HCQ against COVID<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/politics-policy\/coronavirus\/yale-professor-says-hydroxychloroquine-effective-treating-high-risk\">fierce critic of the feds\u2019 demonization<\/a>&nbsp;of the low-cost antiviral, told&nbsp;Just the News&nbsp;the French study authors \u201cmade a big mess of the analysis as published.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But because \u201cthey made<strong>&nbsp;their individual subject data<\/strong>&nbsp;public\u201d for Risch to review, \u201c<strong>I have analyzed<\/strong>&nbsp;those data myself&nbsp;<strong>to come to the numerical conclusions<\/strong>&nbsp;that I will use, again&nbsp;<strong>showing significant mortality reduction when used in outpatients,<\/strong>\u201d he wrote in an email.
