against climate change. He also owns&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.squadronenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Squadron Energy<\/a>, a major Aussie provider of renewable \u201csolutions\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Inside Andrew \u2018Twiggy\u2019 Forrest\u2019s urgent global climate campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/by\/nick-o'malley-hve9s\">Nick O\u2019Malley<\/a><\/strong><br>October 28, 2023 \u2014 5.00am<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside, it is one of those perfect Sydney spring days, 26 degrees and a breeze that\u2019s soft on the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I\u2019m under a red light inside a heat chamber in a University of Sydney laboratory experiencing what a potentially lethal temperature feels like, and for this, I blame Australia\u2019s richest man, Fortescue chairman Dr Andrew \u201cTwiggy\u201d Forrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forrest described calls for everyone to do their bit to tackle climate change as flagrant greenwashing, arguing that there are about 1000 people in the world culpable for climate change and capable of fixing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asked that&nbsp;<strong>when it was time to \u201cput heads on spikes, start with mine, but please don\u2019t forget the other 999\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At another point, he grabbed an audience member\u2019s hand and explained how he had once done the same thing to&nbsp;<strong>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modhi<\/strong>, telling him that&nbsp;<strong>if he did not address climate change he would have blood not just on his fingers, but all the way up his arm.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talk had baffled some of those who attended. Why was an iron ore magnate lecturing academics, including health and climate specialists, on health and climate? Modhi has a loyal following, much like Donald Trump, and Modhi\u2019s followers would have responded pretty much the same as Trump\u2019s supporters would have, if some jerk started manhandling Trump on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Twiggy has more to say on climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSavagely imperfect:\u201d Forrest lets fly at coal, nuclear and ex-Snowy boss Paul Broad<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/reneweconomy.com.au\/author\/sophie-vorrath\/\">Sophie Vorrath<\/a>&nbsp;22 May 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Challenged by 2GB\u2019s Ben Fordham to explain why \u2013 if coal power supplied 78% of New South Wales electricity demand in the last 24 hours \u2013 government would be pushing to switch coal plants off, Forrest\u2019s response was swift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh mate, because if we don\u2019t, we\u2019re toast,\u201d he said, referring to the threat of irreversible dangerous climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But has Forrest considered nuclear power?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not a solution for Australia,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019ve got 20 years, that\u2019s fine\u2026 But when I build iron ore projects, I build them in three years, right?&nbsp;<strong>When I\u2019m building renewable energy projects, you can kick them off in three months. It\u2019s such a quick, energetic, inexpensive solution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNow, nuclear power plants, if they already exist \u2026 you can [use them for] firming power, do that. Even Australia\u2019s climate change and energy minister Chris Bowen recently admitted&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/2023\/10\/24\/aussie-climate-minister-dont-expect-3-2gw-of-new-renewable-capacity-to-stop-blackouts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we shouldn\u2019t expect gigawatts of new renewable capacity to stabilise the grid.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be fair, Twiggy hasn\u2019t ignored the need to firm renewables,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.squadronenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his website<\/a>&nbsp;lists around 20GW hours of firming projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how much would this \u201cfirming\u201d do for Australia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">20GW hours = 7.2 x 10<sup>13<\/sup>&nbsp;joules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov.au\/data\/energy-consumption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Australia uses around 6000 Petajoules of energy per year<\/a>, or 6 x 10<sup>18<\/sup>&nbsp;joules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Twiggy\u2019s firming projects deliver enough energy to power the grid for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">7.2 x 10<sup>13<\/sup>&nbsp;\u00f7 6 x 10<sup>18<\/sup>&nbsp;= 0.000012 years = (x 365.25) 0.004 days =&nbsp;<strong>378 seconds of firmed renewable energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Well done Twiggy, all your b*shit renewable and firming projects just kept the lights on for 6 minutes<\/strong>, when the sun goes down and the wind stops blowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OK, I didn\u2019t count his hydrogen electrolysis storage plant \u2013 but is there a point to counting the hydrogen? If hydrogen worked at scale, nobody would bother with battery packs. And full disclosure, I included all energy use in that 6000 Petajoule figure including oil and gas not used for generating electricity, because you know, electrify everything.
