Inside Andrew \u2018Twiggy\u2019 Forrest\u2019s urgent global climate campaign<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside, it is one of those perfect Sydney spring days, 26 degrees and a breeze that\u2019s soft on the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I\u2019m under a red light inside a heat chamber in a University of Sydney laboratory experiencing what a potentially lethal temperature feels like, and for this, I blame Australia\u2019s richest man, Fortescue chairman Dr Andrew \u201cTwiggy\u201d Forrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forrest described calls for everyone to do their bit to tackle climate change as flagrant greenwashing, arguing that there are about 1000 people in the world culpable for climate change and capable of fixing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He asked that when it was time to \u201cput heads on spikes, start with mine, but please don\u2019t forget the other 999\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At another point, he grabbed an audience member\u2019s hand and explained how he had once done the same thing to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modhi<\/strong>, telling him that if he did not address climate change he would have blood not just on his fingers, but all the way up his arm.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talk had baffled some of those who attended. Why was an iron ore magnate lecturing academics, including health and climate specialists, on health and climate? And what was the urgency of Forrest\u2019s race around the world with this DIY Ted Talk?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lucky Indian Prime Minister\u2019s Modhi\u2019s supporters weren\u2019t in the room when Twiggy manhandled their hero, if this is what happened. Modhi has a loyal following, much like Donald Trump, and Modhi\u2019s followers would have responded pretty much the same as Trump\u2019s supporters would have, if some jerk started manhandling Trump on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Twiggy has more to say on climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Challenged by 2GB\u2019s Ben Fordham to explain why \u2013 if coal power supplied 78% of New South Wales electricity demand in the last 24 hours \u2013 government would be pushing to switch coal plants off, Forrest\u2019s response was swift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh mate, because if we don\u2019t, we\u2019re toast,\u201d he said, referring to the threat of irreversible dangerous climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But has Forrest considered nuclear power?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a solution for Australia,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve got 20 years, that\u2019s fine\u2026 But when I build iron ore projects, I build them in three years, right? When I\u2019m building renewable energy projects, you can kick them off in three months. It\u2019s such a quick, energetic, inexpensive solution.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, nuclear power plants, if they already exist \u2026 you can [use them for] firming power, do that. Do that kind of cyclical power, but don\u2019t do baseload power.<\/strong> Let the punters out there enjoy lower power costs through renewable energy for all their baseload.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renewables don\u2019t solve anyone\u2019s energy problems. Even Australia\u2019s climate change and energy minister Chris Bowen recently admitted we shouldn\u2019t expect gigawatts of new renewable capacity to stabilise the grid.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be fair, Twiggy hasn\u2019t ignored the need to firm renewables, his website<\/a> lists around 20GW hours of firming projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But how much would this \u201cfirming\u201d do for Australia?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

20GW hours = 7.2 x 1013<\/sup> joules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia uses around 6000 Petajoules of energy per year<\/a>, or 6 x 1018<\/sup> joules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Twiggy\u2019s firming projects deliver enough energy to power the grid for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7.2 x 1013<\/sup> \u00f7 6 x 1018<\/sup> = 0.000012 years = (x 365.25) 0.004 days = 378 seconds of firmed renewable energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well done Twiggy, all your b*shit renewable and firming projects just kept the lights on for 6 minutes<\/strong>, when the sun goes down and the wind stops blowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

OK, I didn\u2019t count his hydrogen electrolysis storage plant \u2013 but is there a point to counting the hydrogen? If hydrogen worked at scale, nobody would bother with battery packs. And full disclosure, I included all energy use in that 6000 Petajoule figure including oil and gas not used for generating electricity, because you know, electrify everything. And last year was 5700 Petajoule \u2013 though at least one previous year was higher than 6000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is 6 minutes enough?<\/strong>\u00a0Anyone who thinks a nation as big as Australia can\u2019t lose all wind energy at night , that a few minutes or hours backup would be enough, needs to look at the image below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember June is southern hemisphere winter, and in winter blocking high pressure systems produce cloudless, bitterly cold nights. According to a Guardian article published that very day, Australia was experiencing the coldest start to winter in decades.<\/a> So on the night wind power dropped to zero across most of the country, a large percentage of Australia\u2019s population was cranking up their home heating to ward off the bitter cold.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twiggy, given blocking high pressure systems which kill wind power for days or weeks over the entire continent are a fact of life, too bad you didn\u2019t give reliable 24\u00d77 zero carbon nuclear reactors a chance. <\/strong>Large regions of Australia can also suffer wind droughts which last for months, as South Australia discovered in 2017.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renewables, even \u201cfirmed\u201d renewables, are a nonsense solution to a climate non problem \u2013 even if your name is Twiggy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
