href=\"https:\/\/spaceweather.com\/\">Spaceweather.com<\/a><\/em>): When Solar Cycle 25 began in 2020, leading forecasters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.weather.gov\/news\/190504-sun-activity-in-solar-cycle\">thought it would be weak<\/a>\u00a0and slow to develop. Fast forward three years: NOAA is now predicting a quicker, stronger solar cycle. It has become clear in recent years that the original prediction was too low, which prompted NOAA to issue a new one. The magenta line (<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/spaceweather.com\/images2023\/26oct23\/magenta.jpg?resize=25%2C11&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"25\" height=\"11\" alt=\"\">) traces the new forecast, and takes into account recent high sunspot counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Uncertainties in the new forecast are bounded by different shades of magenta. There is roughly a 25% chance that the smoothed sunspot number will fall within the dark-shaded region; a 50% chance it will fall in the medium-shaded region; and a 75% chance it will fall in the lightest of the shaded regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If this new forecast is correct, Solar Cycle 25 could land in the ballpark of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Solar_cycle_23\">Solar Cycle 23<\/a>, which peaked in 2000-2001, and produced the famous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/spaceweatherarchive.com\/2021\/10\/28\/the-day-earth-lost-half-its-satellites-halloween-storms-2003\/\">Halloween Storms of 2003<\/a>. However, the odds still favor Solar Cycle 25 being a bit weaker than Solar Cycle 23. Either way, next year\u2019s Solar Max could be potent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NOAA plans to update this new forecast every month.
