Via Russian Academy of Sciences October 2, 2023:<\/a> Andrey Petrovich, not everyone knows what limnology is. At one time I was surprised to learn that this is a synonym for the word \u201clake science\u201d. \u2013 \u2013 This is not a synonym, but a translation from Greek. Limnology is the science of lakes. If you look at the map of the lakes where I collected bottom sediments, there are no \u201cfree\u201d lakes left in the area. We also work in the Arctic. We are currently studying firn cores from Antarctica. This year we had an expedition to the Pole of Cold, to the Yakut Lakes. All freshwater and saltwater inland water systems are our targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS):<\/strong> \u201cIn other words, what awaits us is not warming, but cooling. When?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrey Fedotov:<\/strong> \u201cNow we are in a prosperous period, but let\u2019s move on to a disadvantaged one. It\u2019s inevitable. According to my estimates, the transition should occur in 2030\u20132035.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RAS<\/strong>: \u201cSo the Ice Age has already arrived, but we haven\u2019t felt it yet?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrey Fedotov:<\/strong> \u201cNo. When it comes, you will feel it immediately.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

RAS:<\/strong> \u201cAnd what should be done now? Prepare felt boots, warm clothes, heaters?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Present-day Russian TV viewers may get the impression that climate change is not an established fact. In doubt-inducing programs<\/a> regularly aired by Russian state channels in the last decade, audiences are confronted with the message that the climate debate is ongoing and that theories of imminent global cooling hold equal credibility to the consensus on human-induced warming supported<\/a> by the IPCC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A 2020 episode of the show \u201cThe Most Shocking Hypotheses\u201d on the state-controlled REN TV network aired<\/a> claims that \u201cglobal warming turned out to be a global scam.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the episode, the host briefly mentions that information in the program would contradict established science, but said their purpose was to give the floor to another hypothesis so viewers could make their own conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t it time for the whole world to save humanity from imminent doom?\u201d the narrator asks. \u201cIt turns out things are not so straightforward. Perhaps the climate apocalypse exists only in the inflamed minds of people, frightened by global media and the shocking predictions of scientists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Vladimir Putin has voiced<\/a> mixed rhetoric on climate during his two decades in power, from famously joking<\/a> in 2003 that Russians would not need to buy as many fur coats and saying<\/a> in 2019 that \u201cnobody knows the causes of global climate change\u201d to naming climate change a \u201cchallenge of planetary magnitude\u201d in 2015. In 2021, he said<\/a> Russia would achieve climate neutrality by 2060.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
