href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/VOWG_p.DE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(VOWG_p.DE)<\/a>&nbsp;and nearly all other major automakers on Monday sharply criticized the Biden administration proposal to drastically hike fuel efficiency requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Alliance for Automotive Innovation said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration\u2019s (NHTSA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) proposal was unreasonable and requested significant revisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The industry group argued the plan would boost average vehicle prices by $3,000 by 2032 because of penalties automakers would face for not being in compliance, adding the figure \u201cexceeds reason and will increase costs to the American consumer with absolutely no environmental or fuel savings benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NHTSA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/us-proposes-hike-vehicle-fuel-economy-standards-58-mpg-by-2032-2023-07-28\/\">in July proposed boosting<\/a>&nbsp;requirements by 2% per year for passenger cars and 4% per year for pickup trucks and SUVs from 2027 through 2032, resulting in a fleet-wide average fuel efficiency of 58 miles (93 km) per gallon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The American Automotive Policy Council, a group representing the Detroit Three automakers, separately on Monday urged NHTSA to halve its proposed fuel economy increases to 2% annually for trucks, saying the proposal \u201cwould disproportionately impact the truck fleet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group noted 83% of vehicles produced by Ford&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/F.N\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(F.N)<\/a>, GM and Chrysler parent Stellantis&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/companies\/STLAM.MI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(STLAM.MI)<\/a>&nbsp;are trucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NHTSA said its rule \u201cis focused on saving Americans money at the gas pump and strengthening American energy independence,\u201d estimating combined benefits of its proposal exceed costs by more than $18 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The auto alliance&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/automakers-warn-biden-vehicle-rules-not-feasible-could-cost-14-bln-fines-2023-09-29\/\">said automakers<\/a>&nbsp;would face more than $14 billion in non-compliance penalties between 2027 and 2032.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. automakers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/gm-stellantis-face-95-billion-fuel-economy-fines-letter-2023-10-02\/\">separately have warned the fines<\/a>&nbsp;would cost GM $6.5 billion, Stellantis $3 billion and Ford $1 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Automakers also raised alarm at the Energy Department\u2019s proposal to significantly revise how it calculates the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/us-proposes-slash-ev-mileage-ratings-meet-fuel-economy-rules-2023-04-11\/\">petroleum-equivalent fuel econom<\/a>y rating for EVs in NHTSA\u2019s CAFE program, saying it would \u201cdevalue the fuel economy of electric vehicles by 72%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img
