class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leah Stokes is the senior author of a new paper in&nbsp;<em>PNAS<\/em>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1073\/pnas.2302313120\"><em>Prevalence and predictors of wind energy opposition in North America<\/em><\/a>, in which she blames White people for opposing wind projects. She goes on to say that \u201c\u2026wealthier, Whiter communities [opposition] leads to continued pollution in poorer communities, and communities of color.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is evidence that offshore wind projects, or at least the geophysical site surveys required for building them,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfact.org\/2023\/01\/23\/evidence-says-offshore-wind-development-is-killing-lots-of-whales\/\">harm whales<\/a>. The fact that these geophysical surveys can harm whales is well known and regulations prohibit the surveys, but numerous&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/national\/marine-mammal-protection\/incidental-take-authorizations-other-energy-activities-renewable#active-authorizations\">authorizations for surveys<\/a>&nbsp;[waiving the rules] for renewable wind projects have been granted anyway. There is also evidence that wind turbines can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.masterresource.org\/wind-turbine-noise-issues\/wind-turbine-health-effects-enviro-disease\/\">harm our health<\/a>, due to the low frequency sounds they produce. Thus, there are good reasons to protest wind turbine development, whether the protestor is White or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stokes claims in her paper that she has \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2302313120#supplementary-materials\">no competing interest.<\/a>\u201d This was accepted by the editor of the paper, Michael Mann. Stokes is also a policy advisor to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/evergreenaction.com\/\">Evergreen Action<\/a>, and a senior policy&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rewiringamerica.org\/about#advisors\">counsel to Rewiring America<\/a>, an organization promoting the electrification of the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/andymaypetrophysicist.com\/2023\/10\/05\/a-conversation-with-google-bard-on-the-consensus\/\">asked Google Bard<\/a>&nbsp;recently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA connection to the renewable industry is OK and not biased, but to the fossil fuel industry it is. This seems to be bias.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This forced Google Bard to admit that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBoth the renewable energy industry and the fossil fuel industry have a vested interest in the climate change debate.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, Stokes appears to have a competing interest, that could lead to bias in her paper. Advocates of wind are financially supporting her podcast. According to the PNAS rules, a financial interest may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2026membership on a standing advisory council or committee, service on the board of directors, public association with the company or its products, \u2026 compensation as a spokesperson, \u2026 or financial support.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do I need to ask why she left out her competing interests, or why Michael Mann accepted the paper with the \u201cno conflict of interest\u201d statement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>h\/t Willie Soon and&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mcnisbet\/status\/1711397695888191593\"><em>Matthew Nisbet<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leah Stokes blames White people for opposing wind projects.
