Driving an electric car should be a win-win, saving money and the planet. So David* was shocked when the insurance on his Tesla Model Y came up for renewal, and <\/em>Aviva<\/em><\/a> refused to cover him again, while several other brands turned him away.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When David did secure a new deal, the annual cost rocketed from \u00a31,200 to more than \u00a35,000.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy insurer was Aviva from July 2022 to July 2023, but when it was coming up for renewal, I received a letter stating that they would not be covering the <\/em>Tesla<\/em><\/a> Model Y any more,\u201d David says. \u201cI am a member of a Tesla UK owners forum, and lots of other people seem to be having the same issue.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Facebook group, members share stories of horror renewal quotes, with increases ranging from 60% (up to \u00a31,100) to a staggering 940% (a jump from \u00a3447 to \u00a34,661, according to a screengrab shared by one driver).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI spent weeks on every comparison site as well as trying individual insurers and specialist brokers, but either they wouldn\u2019t cover the car or the quotes were \u00a35,000 or more,\u201d says David, whose only change in circumstance was three points on a licence.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Privilege, Vitality, Axa and the specialist broker Adrian Flux were among the brands he found were \u201cunable to insure him at this time\u201d before he nailed down a policy with Direct Line, albeit at a price.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe best quote I could get was from Direct Line at \u00a34,500,\u201d he says, adding that the total cost exceeded \u00a35,000 once the interest for paying monthly was included, \u201cbecause who has got that kind of money in one go?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it is not only owners of Model Ys \u2013 which with a starting price of about \u00a345,000 was the <\/em>bestselling electric car in the UK<\/em><\/a> last year \u2013 who are finding that, like the government, insurers are wobbling about the cost of net zero.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alex Gerlis, who bought a Smart EQ Forfour last year, had insurance from <\/em>John Lewis<\/em><\/a> Finance but, before the mid-August renewal date, it advised him it would not be able to offer a renewal because it was not insuring electric cars<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It comes as all motorists face soaring insurance costs, with prices said to be at an all-time high. A recent <\/em>cost of living<\/em><\/a> bulletin from the Office for National Statistics revealed that the price of car insurance \u2013 which for many Britons is one of their biggest household bills \u2013 is up by 52.9% in the last 12 months.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this average masks bigger increases for electric car owners, according to Confused.com. Its figures, derived from quotes, show that insurance premiums for electric vehicles are 72% \u2013 or \u00a3402 \u2013 higher than this time last year, at a typical \u00a3959. Meanwhile, for petrol and diesel car drivers, the increase is 29%, or \u00a3192, taking the figure to \u00a3848.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have no sympathy for these fools, who have been more than happy to taxpayer subsidies for their cars and avoid paying thousands of pounds in fuel duty, and then preen themselves under the illusion they are saving the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trouble is that all of this is coming our way as well in the not too distant future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
