It\u2019s safe to assume no one consciously sets out to challenge a narrative as deeply entrenched and emotionally charged as climate change. Dr William Happer, an American physicist<\/strong> and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Physics at Princeton<\/strong> University, certainly didn\u2019t. It was only in 1991<\/strong>, upon Happer\u2019s appointment by President George W Bush as director of Energy Research in the US Department of Energy<\/strong>, that his interaction with climate change authorities<\/strong> \u2013 and their refusal to engage in customary scientific debate on climate change<\/strong> \u2013 piqued his interest.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thereafter, Happer was\u00a0dismissed for<\/strong>\u00a0his contrarian views and\u00a0\u2018head butting\u2019 with climate change luminary Al Gore<\/strong>, only to be brought back to Washington by former president Donald Trump in 2018. BizNews spoke to Happer about\u00a0his<\/strong>\u00a0prodigious career and\u00a0discovery that the burgeoning climate change hysteria had no scientific basis<\/strong>. Happer meticulously detailed\u00a0why and how CO2, the \u201cdemon gas\u201d, is not a pollutant but is essential to mankind\u2019s prosperity.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Professor William Happer on the effect of carbon dioxide on planet Earth<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Carbon dioxide<\/strong>\u00a0is what\u00a0drives life on Earth.<\/strong>\u00a0The growth of plants depends on carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide in the air diffuses into the leaves of plants through little holes, and the plants combine this with water and it requires energy. This energy comes from sunlight. So,\u00a0the combination of carbon dioxide, the so-called pollutant, water and sunlight is what makes life<\/strong>. You know, that\u2019s what we live on. And carbon dioxide at the present time is much lower [in] concentration than has prevailed over most of geological history. [During] most of geological history, it\u2019s pretty clear\u00a0from proxy records, CO2 levels have been two or three times greater than they are now.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We probably don\u2019t have enough fossil fuels around to restore those levels
where plants evolve and where they function best.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But even the\u00a0relatively small increases<\/strong>\u00a0we\u2019ve had \u2013 from maybe 280, 300 parts per million 200 years ago to a little over 400 today \u2013 that\u2019s not a big increase. It\u2019s 35%, maybe. But it\u00a0has caused greening<\/strong>\u00a0all around the Earth. You can see that from satellites looking down over the last two or three decades. Earth is getting greener. Especially arid regions are getting greener. You know, the edges of the great deserts of the Earth are shrinking. They\u2019re not growing, they are shrinking.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re shrinking because of more CO2. And the reason is that there are a number of\u00a0benefits from more CO2<\/strong>, but one of the most important ones is that if there\u2019s more CO2, plants can live with less water. They don\u2019t waste as much water with more CO2 in the air, because they grow\u00a0leaves with fewer holes in them so they don\u2019t leak as much water<\/strong>. And the little holes, the\u00a0stomata<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 the little mouths, that\u2019s what it means and it\u2019s where the CO2 comes in \u2013 don\u2019t open as wide. So, the problem with sucking CO2 out of the air, which is what plants have to do, is\u00a0for every CO2 molecule that diffuses into your leaf, you lose a hundred water molecules diffusing the other way.<\/strong>\u00a0This is a real dilemma for the planet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s true. CO2 is a greenhouse gas and it warms the Earth,
but the warming isn\u2019t enough to matter.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

So, it\u2019s an\u00a0ineffective climate influencer.<\/strong>\u00a0Yet you get this demon gas that is going to cause us all to boil to death or something like that. Nothing could be further from the truth. It\u2019s a trivial gas, but it\u2019s very, very good for life on Earth.\u00a0More CO2 has been wonderful for mankind because it helps provide the abundance of food we have today and it\u2019s caused no harm, whatsoever.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On climate change activism having become like a religious cult<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

It is a religious cult for many people.\u00a0Many people have stopped believing in traditional religions,<\/strong>\u00a0you know? So, they don\u2019t believe in God, but they need something beyond themselves to believe in. What could be more noble than saving the planet? \u201cThe planet is threatened by the demon gas CO2, so we\u2019re going to save it.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0The fact that it means\u00a0essentially suicide for the human race<\/strong>\u00a0doesn\u2019t get into their brains. But that is what it means.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cannot immediately eliminate CO2 and let the human population survive.
It can\u2019t be done. So, it\u2019s a suicide pact, you know, what is being proposed.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The movement is a joke \u2013 a little bit \u2013 but it\u2019s not so different from\u00a0a coalition of organised crime and religious fanaticism.<\/strong>\u00a0And the religious fanatics \u2026 You know, you don\u2019t argue with someone about their religion. This is not a joking matter. It brings crusades and religious wars and God knows what. So, that\u2019s a big problem. There is this religious aspect; so many people now have been\u00a0brainwashed into thinking there really is an emergency.<\/strong>\u00a0And anyone who stands in the way of saving the planet is Satan incarnate. They are sincere people but they\u2019re just badly misled.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Many of the\u00a0most vociferous climate emergency folks;<\/strong>\u00a0if you press them, they say, \u201cYes, the real problem is not fossil fuels, it\u2019s human beings. You know,\u00a0there are just too many people.<\/strong>\u00a0We should not have more than a billion people.\u201d We\u2019re roughly eight billion now, so that means seven out of eight of us should disappear from the planet.\u00a0This is extremely dangerous. It\u2019s an evil cult.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

On what has been lost owing to climate hysteria<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The alarmist community recognised 20 years ago that the warming is a lot less than their models<\/strong> had predicted. \u201cJust you wait,\u201d they\u2019d say, \u201cSooner or later it will warm. But in the meantime, we need something else to keep the alarm going.\u201d And they seized on extreme weather and rising sea levels and ocean acidification<\/strong>\u2026 Things that really were not warming. And they changed<\/strong> the name from global warming to climate change because<\/strong> warming wasn\u2019t going to cut it. There wasn\u2019t enough warming.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earth has an unstable climate which isn\u2019t very well understood<\/strong>\u00a0to this day, and it would be wonderful if we understood it better. But I think\u00a0our ability to understand it has been set back very badly by the climate hysteria.<\/strong>\u00a0So, what could\u2019ve been\u00a020, 30 years<\/strong>\u00a0of good, basic research and real understanding of the climate has been\u00a0wasted with hysteria about this false climate emergency,<\/strong>\u00a0which does not exist. In the meantime, the real parts of the climate \u2013 which would be good to understand \u2013 have been ignored.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

It\u2019s very small. And so, it\u2019s probably beneficial on balance. If you double CO2, it seems like a lot, that\u2019s a 100% increase of CO2. How much does that affect the cooling radiation that goes off to space? That sounds like a lot, but in effect it only decreases the radiation to space by 1%. So, 100% increase of CO2, 1% decrease in radiation to space. It\u2019s a very small effect<\/strong>, and you\u00a0don\u2019t have to change<\/strong>\u00a0the Earth\u2019s temperature very much or cloudiness\u00a0very much to bring it back into equilibrium<\/strong>\u00a0with the situation before you increase the CO2.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
