It\u2019s a 24\/7\/365 operation. The Regional Manager likes to visit each plant, spend a day or more there, and stir things up. So the woman decides to record the comings and goings of the Regional Manager. Dates of visits of the Manager to the plant.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When she runs the numbers, she finds out that the Regional Manager\u2019s been visiting the Tennessee Valley plant about one day in five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So here are two questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Figure 1, is a visit by the Regional Manager a \u201crare event\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Figure 1, are these visits \u201cextreme events\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obviously, no. Something that happens about one time out of five is neither rare nor extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why is this a relevant thought experiment? Well, like I said, I was wondering what makes an event \u201crare\u201d or \u201cextreme\u201d. So I went to \u201cTHE SCIENCE\u201d, which in this case are the Glossaries of the two latest IPCC Assessment Reports. Here are the definitions from the Fifth (AR5) and Sixth (AR6) Assessment Reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Extreme weather event<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An extreme weather event is an event that is rare at a particular place and time of year. Definitions of rare vary, but an extreme weather event would normally be as rare as or rarer than the 10th or 90th percentile of a probability density function estimated from observations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Extreme weather event&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An event that is rare at a particular place and time of year. Definitions of \u2018rare\u2019 vary, but an extreme weather event would normally be as rare as or rarer than the 10th or 90th percentile of a probability density function estimated from observations. By definition, the characteristics of what is called extreme weather may vary from place to place in an absolute sense.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I cracked up when I saw those definitions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, because on average, one observation out of every five is&nbsp;<em>\u201cas rare or rarer than the 10th or 90th percentile of a probability density function estimated from observations\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the IPCC is claiming that one weather observation in five is \u201crare\u201d \u2026 here\u2019s how that plays out for a few years of daily Chicago Midway Airport temperatures. And the IPCC itself agrees. The following are the areas where the IPCC itself, in the graphic above, says there is&nbsp;<strong><em>low scientific confidence in the existence of any visible \u201cglobal warming\u201d effects<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;in the form of weather extremes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Air Pollution Weather (temperature inversions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aridity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avalanche (snow)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average rain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Average Wind Speed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coastal Flood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drought Affecting Crops (agricultural drought)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drought From Lack Of Rain (hydrological drought)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Erosion of Coastlines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire Weather (hot and windy)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Flooding From Heavy Rain (pluvial floods)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frost<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy Rain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavy Snowfall and Ice Storms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Landslides<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Marine Heatwaves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ocean Alkalinity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Radiation at the Earth\u2019s Surface<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>River\/Lake Floods<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sand and Dust Storms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sea Level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe Wind Storms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Snow, Glacier, and Ice Sheets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tropical Cyclones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when folks claim things like \u201cWe\u2019re already seeing the effects of global warming in storms\/cyclones\/floods\/coastal erosion\/fire weather\/sea level\/etc.\u201d, feel free to tell them that the IPCC and reality itself both beg to disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, you can clearly see above that the IPCC itself agrees wholeheartedly with the paper&nbsp;<em>\u201cA critical assessment of extreme events trends in times of global warming\u201d<\/em>. Both the paper and the IPCC Table 12.2 above say that&nbsp;<strong><em>to date there is very little sign of any change in almost all measures of extreme events.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since my earlier post, however, there\u2019s been a disturbing development. Despite the paper agreeing with the IPCC, in an act of venal scientific malfeasance, the usual alarmist \u201cscientists\u201d including the serial liar Dr. Michael Mann have intimidated the publisher of the paper into withdrawing the paper.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I cannot find any report of any specific statement that these underhanded \u201cscientists\u201d found to be false. They just claimed unspecified problems with&nbsp;<em>\u201cthe selection of the data, the analysis, and the resulting conclusions\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;\u2026 yeah, right. There\u2019s an excellent discussion of the issues&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/quadrant.org.au\/opinion\/doomed-planet\/2023\/08\/how-science-is-done-these-days\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Climate cowards. They can\u2019t defeat an argument, so they try to censor it.
