not because it was methodologically unsound; not because other researchers countered the paper with scientific arguments \u2013 no, simply because \u201csome people \u00a0didn\u2019t like the conclusions\u201d in the paper.\u00a0 Those offended, the ClimateGate gang, appearing in this round of scandal are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sab.noaa.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/HollandGreg_short.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greg Holland<\/a>\u00a0 ;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lisa_Alexander_(earth_scientist)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lisa Alexander<\/a>\u00a0;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unsw.edu.au\/staff\/steven-sherwood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steve Sherwood<\/a>\u00a0;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_E._Mann\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Mann<\/a>\u00a0;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Friederike_Otto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Friederike Otto<\/a>\u00a0;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stefan_Rahmstorf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stefan Rahmstorf<\/a>, took their tears of outrage to the climate-collusion mass media and cried:\u00a0 <strong><em>\u201cHow dare they disagree with\u00a0us!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Springer\/Nature\u2019s editors and publishers shamefully caved in to the pressure and retracted the paper after a messy and irregular additional review.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[ Why is this essay titled \u201cThe Wolf and the Lamb\u201d?&nbsp; Should it be retracted?<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/the-alimonti-addendum?publication_id=119454&amp;post_id=136435601&amp;isFreemail=false\">The Alimonti Ad<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/the-alimonti-addendum?publication_id=119454&amp;post_id=136435601&amp;isFreemail=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dendum<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this time, I have been communicating with Gianluca Alimonti, lead author, about the retraction attempt (at first) and the final retraction by Springer.&nbsp; Alimonti et al. writes today:&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>\u201cWe, the four authors, have just written a report that clarifies the whole issue.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/wattsupwiththat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/2023-EPJ-retraction-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cA CRITICAL ASSESSMENT OF EXTREME EVENTS TRENDS IN TIMES OF GLOBAL WARMING \u2014 Brief history of the troubled life of the article and its retraction\u201d<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entire document (hereafter \u2018Brief History\u2019) is available from the WUWT servers as a .pdf at the above link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Please be aware that English is not the author\u2019s first language, they speak and write Italian, so some of the sentence structures and word choices read a little uncomfortably<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some excerpts from the Brief History document::<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Alimonti et al. 2022 deals with the concept of a \u201cclimate emergency\u201d,&nbsp; their Brief History includes a helpful definitional footnote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c1 This is what IPCC AR6 says on the climate crisis: \u201cAlso, some media outlets have recently adopted and&nbsp; promoted terms and phrases stronger than the more neutral \u2018climate change\u2019 and \u2018global warming\u2019, including&nbsp; \u2018climate crisis\u2019, \u2018global heating\u2019, and \u2018climate emergency\u2019. Google searches on those terms, and on \u2018climate&nbsp; action\u2019, increased 20-fold in 2019, when large social movements such as School Strikes for Climate gained&nbsp; worldwide attention\u201d [p. 173].\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chronology begins with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c1. 30 Sep. 2022: approximately nine months after the publication of our article in the international&nbsp; scientific journal EPJ Plus (European Physical Journal \u2013 Plus), which took place after having passed a&nbsp; regular peer review process, in September 2022 the article was placed \u201cunder dispute\u201d (with a&nbsp; message of caution to readers reported on the EPJ-Plus website), on the base of personal opinions&nbsp; expressed by some scientists to&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2022\/sep\/22\/sky-and-the-australian-find-noevidence-%20%20of-a-climate-emergency-they-werent-looking-hard-enough\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>a journalist of The Guardian newspaper<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp; (which constitutes a rather&nbsp; anomalous procedure in the scientific field)\u201d<\/em>&nbsp;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then onto:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&nbsp;\u201c6) including the original article reviewer, two out of three reviewers (but Prof. Pielke in his reconstruction of the story carried out on the basis of information received from a whistleblower \u2013&nbsp; see the links at the bottom of this document \u2013&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/think-of-the-implications-of-publishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>speaks of four reviewers out of five<\/em><\/a><em>\u2026) expressed a&nbsp; positive evaluation. Despite the majority of positive evaluations, an adjudicator has been&nbsp; contacted and with what we believe is a very weak and cherry picked analysis on our original&nbsp; article (although we had agreed that there would have been no other revisions of the original&nbsp; article) he\/she recommended not to publish the Addendum and to retract our original article.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And lastly, I\u2019ll add:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201c7) 13 July 2023: on the base of the evaluation of the adjudicator who, as written in his\/her report,&nbsp; \u201chas not been asked to comment on the original paper\u201d (\u201cexcusatio non petita, accusatio manifesta\u201d&nbsp; would be natural to say\u2026) the Editor wrote us on July the 13th that, after an in-depth consultation&nbsp; with the Publisher, not only our Addendum would not have been published but also that our original&nbsp; article would have been retracted. (and here we ask ourselves what qualification the publisher&nbsp; had to enter into this decision-making process)\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the Latin-handicapped (such as I)&nbsp;<em>\u201c[Excusatio non petita accusatio manifesta (An unprovoked excuse is an obvious accusation)]<\/em>\u201d \u2013 [&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/1895994\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">source<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 as a title to a paper at NIH ]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;As part of their comment on the retraction notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cNote that our conclusions are in perfect agreement with what emerges from Tab 12.12 of IPCC&nbsp; AR6 (attached) which summarizes the variations in the extreme events already observable today or&nbsp; which, according to IPCC forecasts, will become observable in the near future (between now and&nbsp; 2050 and between 2050 and 2100), obtained using a very drastic scenario, today considered unrealistic&nbsp; (RCP 8.5). Haec propter illos&nbsp; scripta est homines fabula qui fictis causis innocentes opprimunt.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Latin is tricky to translate with an online translator, which results in&nbsp;<em>\u201cThe wolf and the lamb had come to the same stream\u2026 the wolf stood higher, and the lamb was far lower\u2026 And so he tore the prey and killed it unjustly. This story was written because of those men who oppress the innocent with false causes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em>&nbsp;The translation does not make a lot of sense to me, but it refers to this fable, found in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aesop%27s_Fables\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Aesop<\/a>&nbsp;and in both the Greek of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Babrius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Babrius<\/a>&nbsp;and the Latin of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phaedrus_(fabulist)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phaedrus<\/a>, as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wolf_and_the_Lamb\">The Wolf and the Lamb<\/a>\u201d. The Wiki entry offers this phrasing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cA wolf comes upon a lamb while both are drinking from a stream and, in order to justify taking its life, accuses it of various misdemeanors, all of which the lamb proves to be impossible.
