Green Energy Activists are hitting hard realities, as summarized by Jonathan Lesser at New York Post Why wind and solar power are running out of juice<\/strong><\/a>.  Excerpts in italics with my bolds and added images<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Green energy and the push to electrify everything have been in the news recently but for all the wrong reasons.\u00a0Instead of the green energy nirvana<\/strong>\u00a0politicians and green energy advocates have promised,\u00a0economic and physical reality has begun to set in<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\n
\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Painful Green Economics<\/span><\/em><\/h5>

Start with the economic realities of Wind EnergyThe result: Even while Siemens Energy CEO Christian Bruch insists that \u201cenergy transition without wind energy does not work,\u201d\u00a02022 saw 16% less new wind-power capacity<\/span>\u00a0than in 2021, according to the American Clean Power Association.Wind turbine manufacturers<\/span>\u00a0like Siemens and General Electric have\u00a0reported huge losses for the first half of this yea<\/span>r, almost\u00a0$5 billion<\/span>\u00a0for the former\u00a0and $1 billion<\/span>\u00a0for the latter. Among other problems,\u00a0turbine quality control has suffered<\/span>, forcing manufacturers such as Siemens and Vestas\u00a0to incur costly warranty repairs.In Europe, offshore wind output<\/span>\u00a0has been\u00a0less than promised<\/span>, while operating\u00a0costs<\/span>\u00a0have been much\u00a0higher than advertised.<\/span>\u00a0Offshore wind developers in Europe and the US are\u00a0canceling projects<\/span>\u00a0because of higher materials and construction costs.In\u00a0Massachusetts<\/span>, Avangrid, the developer of the 1,200 MW Commonwealth Wind project\u00a0paid $48 million to get out<\/span>\u00a0of its existing contract to sell power to ratepayers. That way, the company can rebid the project next year at an even higher price.Close by, the developers of the 1,200 MW\u00a0SouthCoast Wind Project<\/span>\u00a0off Martha\u2019s Vineyard will pay about\u00a0$60 million to exit<\/span>\u00a0their existing contract.Rhode Island<\/span>\u00a0Energy, the state\u2019s main electric utility, recently\u00a0rejected the second Revolution Wind Project<\/span>\u00a0because the contract price was too high.And\u00a0\u00d8rsted, the Danish government-owned compan<\/span>y that is developing the Southfork Wind and Sunrise Wind projects off Long Island \u2014 as well as the Ocean Wind project off the New Jersey coast \u2014 last week announced that, without additional subsidies and higher contract prices, it will have to write-off\u00a0billions of dollars in potential losses.In New Jersey,<\/span>\u00a0the legislature passed a\u00a0law in July, which is likely unconstitutional, to bail out \u00d8rsted<\/span>. The legislation will\u00a0award the company<\/span>\u00a0with several billion dollars of investment\u00a0tax credits that were supposed to go to consumers.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n

Few Hosts for Land-Gobbling Wind and Solar Projects<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Back on dry land, opposition to siting land-gobbling wind and solar projects continues to grow.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local governments in\u00a0Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio have all rejected or restricted projects.<\/strong>\u00a0Rural communities, it seems,\u00a0do not want<\/strong>\u00a0to host\u00a0massive turbine farms \u2014 nor the high-voltage transmission lines<\/strong>\u00a0needed to deliver electricity to power-hungry cities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Electric Vehicles Leaking Money<\/span><\/em><\/h5>

Then there are electric vehicles.Ford<\/span>, which has bet heavily on its electric Lightning pickup and Mustang and received a $9.2 billion government-subsidized loan in January, revealed that it has\u00a0lost $60,000 for every EV it sold<\/span>\u00a0in the first half of this year.Rivian,<\/span>\u00a0another EV company, managed to reduce its\u00a0losses per EV<\/span>\u00a0to around\u00a0$33,000,<\/span>\u00a0a big improvement over the $67,000 loss per EV in the first quarter of the year.Proterra,<\/span>\u00a0a Bay Area-based manufacturer of electric buses and batteries that\u00a0had a $10 million loan forgiven by the Biden Administration, just filed for bankruptcy.<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Alternative Energy Madness<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Like the wizard in The Wizard of Oz, alternative energy proponents claim these are just temporary little potholes on the road to economic and climate nirvana<\/strong> \u2014 all of which can be filled with more money<\/strong> through renegotiated power purchase contracts and more zero-emissions mandates.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alternative energy madness \u2013 and that\u2019s what it is \u2013 has had its biggest impact in California<\/strong>.  But New York<\/strong> and New Jersey<\/strong> have adopted most of that state\u2019s mandates.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sales of new internal combustion vehicles<\/strong> will be banned<\/strong> beginning in 2035<\/strong> in the states. All of the electricity<\/strong> sold to retail consumers will have to be \u201czero-emissions.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homeowners and building owners<\/strong>\u00a0will be forced to replace gas- and oil-burning space and water heaters with electric heat pumps.\u00a0 \u00a0And, gas stoves will be regulated out of existence.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Carbon Taxes Draining Wallets<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

New York also will soon implement another California import: a carbon \u201ccap-and-invest\u201d program,<\/strong> which will impose a tax on fossil fuels sold by wholesalers and utilities.  The billions of dollars<\/strong> collected each year<\/strong> will provide a green slush fund,<\/strong> allowing the governor and legislators to hand out money to their politically favored cronies, as has so often been the case in the past.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington State began its \u201ccap-and-invest\u201d program<\/strong> in January of this year.  Modeled after California\u2019s, Governor Jay Inslee promised<\/strong> the program would have \u201cminimal impact<\/strong>, if any. We are talking about pennies.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, the program has raised gasoline prices \u2013 almost 50 cents per gallon so far this year. Washington State now<\/strong> claims the honor of having the highest gasoline prices in the nation:<\/strong> In Seattle, for example, the average price of regular gasoline is over $5 per gallon.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, the entire point of the program was to raise gasoline and fossil fuel prices to encourage consumers to switch to electric vehicles,<\/strong> mass transit, electric heat pumps, and so forth.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But politics being what it is<\/strong>, Governor Inslee, along with environmentalists and legislative proponents, now blames greedy oil companies for the price increases.  <\/strong>\u2018We won\u2019t stand for\u2019 corporate greed,\u201d the Governor said at a July 20, 2023, press conference.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once\u00a0New York\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0cap-and-invest program starts, probably next year, you can\u00a0expect a similar outcome:<\/strong>\u00a0higher gasoline and diesel prices, higher prices for natural gas and fuel oil used to heat homes and apartment buildings, and endless political demagoguery denouncing it all.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
And Basic Physics Stand in the Way<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

As the push toward electric-everything powered by green energy barrels along, proponents also refuse to confront basic physical realities.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Electricity accounts for just one-sixth of all energy use<\/strong>. The rest is fossil fuels consumed for transportation, space and water heating, and manufacturing.\u00a0Convert everything to electricity and electricity consumption will increase. A lot.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

According to the New York Climate Action Committee\u2019s Final Scoping Plan,\u00a0New York<\/strong>\u00a0will meet that increased demand by building almost 15,000 MW of\u00a0offshore wind<\/strong>, like the Southfork Wind and Sunrise Wind projects, and over 40,000 MW of\u00a0solar panels<\/strong>. (By comparison, the\u00a0emissions-free Indian Point Nuclear Plant,<\/strong>\u00a0which former Governor Cuomo\u00a0forced to close<\/strong>, had a capacity of just over 1,000 MW.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Because the wind doesn\u2019t always blow and the sun doesn\u2019t always shine, keeping the lights on will require far more backup resources. This \u201creserve margin\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 basically, the amount of generating capacity available to step in and meet electric demand \u2013 will need to increase from the current 20% to over 100%<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, for every MW of generating capacity in 2040,
there will have to be an equal amount or more in reserve.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s like having to buy a second car and keep it idling all the time in case the first one won\u2019t start. The\u00a0Scoping Plan claims<\/strong>\u00a0this will be accomplished by building over 20,000 MW of so-called \u201cdispatchable emissions-free generating resources\u201d\u00a0(DEFRs) and<\/strong>\u00a0installing over 12,000 MW of\u00a0 battery storage.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Transition Plans Depend on Green Fantasies<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Those claims are fantasy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with DEFRs,<\/strong> which are generators that burn pure hydrogen manufactured from surplus wind and solar power. They have yet to be invented<\/strong> (we repeat \u2013 they do not yet exist). Nor<\/strong> do any large-scale commercial plants to manufacture green hydrogen<\/strong> exist either.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hydrogen cannot be transported in existing natural gas pipelines. An\u00a0entirely new infrastructure<\/strong>\u00a0will need to be built.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Assuming a new technology will be invented by whatever date politicians decree is foolish.<\/strong> That\u2019s not how technology works. Just ask everyone working on commercial fusion power<\/strong>, which has been just 30 years off for the last 50 years.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for battery storage<\/strong>, 12,000 MW will provide at most 48,000 megawatt-hours of actual electricity.<\/strong> That may sound like a lot but based on the New York Independent System Operator\u2019s (NYISO) most recent forecast, on a windless and cold winter evening in 2040, it would keep the lights on for only one hour.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The materials requirements for batteries also are staggering,<\/strong>\u00a0which is one reason why replacing existing internal combustion cars and trucks will be impossible. Batteries require large quantities of cobalt, much of which is now mined in the Congo using child and slave labor. They also require lots of graphite, most of which comes from China \u2013 the same with the rare minerals needed for wind turbines and solar panels.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Much Pain for a Drop in the Bucket<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, nothing\u00a0New York<\/strong>\u00a0does will have any measurable impact on world climate because the\u00a0state\u2019s carbon emissions are minuscule<\/strong>\u00a0compared to the 35 billion metric tons of total global emissions. As long as China, which accounts for almost one-third of world energy-related carbon emissions, India, and other developing nations focus policies on economic growth, rather than cutting emissions, New York\u2019s efforts will have no environmental value.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Nuclear Energy Denial<\/strong><\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, if politicians and environmentalists were serious<\/strong> about zero-emissions goals, they would abandon the electrification mandates, and abandon reliance on wind, solar, battery storage, DEFRs, green hydrogen, and other unrealistic and unreliable energy sources.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, they would embrace<\/strong> the one existing technology that dare not speak its name: nuclear power.<\/strong> Unlike wind and solar, nuclear plants run all the time. New, small modular reactors will offer greater safety, lower costs, and easy scalability to meet increased electricity demand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Storing spent fuel is a political issue, not a technological one, for which the best solution is to recycle and reuse it, as\u00a0France has done for the last half-century without incident.<\/strong>\u00a0The country is also developing a permanent storage site for nuclear waste that can no longer be reprocessed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The economist Herb Stein once quipped that anything that cannot go on forever, won\u2019t.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s true of New York\u2019s current alternative energy madness.
It won\u2019t save the world, but it will grind down the state\u2019s economy
and its residents until the folly is too great to ignore.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
