President Joe Biden\u2019s administration hosted \u201cIndigenous Knowledge\u201d seminars, including one where a speaker admonished scientist attendees about \u201cdisrespecting\u201d knowledge provided by \u201cspirits,\u201d according to a video uncovered by the Washington Free Beacon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House\u00a0Office of Science and Technology Policy<\/a>\u00a0(OSTP) told dozens of federal agencies to adopt \u201cIndigenous Knowledge\u201d for \u201cresearch, policies, and decision making,\u201d in a November 2022\u00a0memo<\/a>. In April, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) hosted a\u00a0webinar<\/a>\u00a0titled \u201cIncorporating Indigenous Knowledges into Federal Research and Management,\u201d in which a speaker warned scientists about \u201cdisrespecting\u201d indigenous knowledge, including \u201cspirits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you ask for knowledge and you take it and use it in a way that you didn\u2019t intend or you misuse it, you\u2019re not only disrespecting that individual that you sought that knowledge from,\u201d Traditional Ecological Knowledge Outreach Specialist Melonee Montano said in the April webinar attended by scientists. \u201cYou\u2019re disrespecting the teachers that they obtained the knowledge from. \u201cThe damages may be unseen at times,\u201d Montano added. \u201cHowever, the damages can be huge and have a major ripple effect throughout time if you don\u2019t make sure you\u2019re protecting that information that you\u2019ve obtained, if you don\u2019t make sure that you\u2019re taking care of those people that have helped to provide those things to you, too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Biden administration promoted the OSTP to\u00a0a\u00a0cabinet-level<\/a>\u00a0agency in 2021. Moreover, the November OSTP memo also suggests collaborating with \u201cspiritual leaders.\u201d The White House has published over three dozen documents that positively reference \u201cIndigenous Knowledge,\u201d\u00a0according<\/a>\u00a0to the Free Beacon\u2019s investigation. A December\u00a0memo<\/a>\u00a0states the Biden administration acknowledges that \u201cIndigenous Knowledge \u2026 contributes to the scientific, technical, social, and economic advancements of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the state level, Hawaii\u2019s Department of Land and Natural Resources\u2019 Deputy Director M. Kaleo Manuel advocated for \u201cindigenous knowledge\u201d and delayed a request for water diversion to fight the\u00a0Maui<\/a>\u00a0wildfires due to possible impacts on a local farmer, according to a letter sent by a Hawaiian water management campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manuel prioritized incorporating \u201cindigenous knowledge to the fields of water advocacy and management in Hawaii,\u201d which allegedly could have contributed to the worsening of the Hawaii wildfires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The White House, OSTP and USGS did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montano is currently on a leave of absence, according to an automatic email response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
