traffic-related pollution levels. The&nbsp;<em>Telegraph<\/em>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/09\/03\/glasgow-lez-low-emission-zone-nitrogen-dioxide-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has the story<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pollution levels of gases linked to traffic rose by about 10% in the centre of Glasgow after the SNP set up a \u2018draconian\u2019&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/politics\/2023\/09\/02\/snp-glasgow-clean-air-zone-sadiq-khan-ulez-london-soft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ulez-style scheme<\/a>, official figures show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nitrogen dioxide levels in the city\u2019s Hope Street, which has repeatedly had the country\u2019s worst air quality, were measured at an average of 34 micrograms per cubic metre between June and August this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This compared with a figure of 31mg in the same period last year, before the city\u2019s low emission zone (Lez) was introduced \u2013 a rise of 9.7%. Enforcement of other vehicles started on June 1st this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One air quality\u00ad expert, who did not wish to be named, told the&nbsp;<em>Scottish Mail on Sunday<\/em>: \u201cBuses are the main polluters, hence the reason levels remain more or less the same as before, and therefore y\u00adou have to question the point of banning cars given all the cost, disruption and inconvenience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/07\/25\/low-emission-ban-audi-overturned-ulez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glasgow scheme<\/a>&nbsp;is stricter than London\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2023\/08\/28\/ulez-signs-could-be-unlawful-tribunal-ruling-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controversial ultra-low emission zone (Ulez)<\/a>&nbsp;as drivers in older vehicles are banned from entering the city centre, rather than being given the option to pay a daily fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An older car entering the zone each day would face penalties of \u00a360, a penalty that doubles with each subsequent breach of rules up to a daily cap of \u00a3480 for cars and vans and \u00a3960 for buses and HGVs.
