We\u2019re about halfway through the 2023 hurricane season, predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasters to be a near-normal year, and it\u2019s been rather quiet. [NOAA updated its forecast to\u00a0above-normal on Aug. 10<\/a>. \u2013CCD Ed.]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But with a few storms brewing this week in the Atlantic, we expect to hear the usual shrieking from politicians, activists, and the media, blaming the weather on man-caused climate change. [emphasis, links added]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our suggestion is to\u00a0pay no attention to the eco-screamers\u2019 lamentations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday, the National Hurricane Center\u00a0issued advisories<\/a>\u00a0for a\u00a0hurricane and a tropical storm in the Atlantic Ocean<\/strong>\u00a0and an advisory for a\u00a0tropical storm in the Eastern Pacific.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of the three, the Atlantic storm Idalia seems to be the most dangerous. It\u00a0could make landfall as a hurricane on the Gulf Coast<\/strong>\u00a0of Florida on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That could mean a\u00a0life-changing disaster for thousands of Floridians<\/strong>. The\u00a0climatistas<\/a>, though,\u00a0see opportunity in crisis<\/strong>. They\u00a0never let a serious calamity go to waste<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before the weekend was over,\u00a0the press was linking Idalia to \u201cclimate change,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0which is of course\u00a0code for \u201cman-made global warming,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0as if there had\u00a0never been a hurricane before humans began burning fossil fuels.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0alarmist community has long insisted<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0weather is not the same as climate<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0any time anyone ever pointed to\u00a0mild summers and colder-than-usual winters<\/strong>\u00a0as evidence that the\u00a0global warming theory was bunk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But\u00a0when it\u2019s\u00a0convenient for spreading fear<\/a><\/strong>, the same crowd takes\u00a0isolated weather events<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and claims they are\u00a0evidence that human activity is warming the planet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even in 2023,\u00a0truth is still important to some of us<\/strong>, and the facts show that the\u00a0global warming zealots are false prophets<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inconvenient to their con are\u00a0data that show that death and destruction<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0climate-related disasters<\/strong>\u00a0have\u00a0fallen sharply over the last century<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Annual fatalities from floods, droughts, wildfires, storms, and extreme temperatures<\/strong>\u00a0have\u00a0tumbled\u00a0by nearly 98%<\/a>\u00a0over that era<\/strong>, from nearly 500,000 in the early 1920s to fewer than 12,000 in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The details don\u2019t fit the narrative, but when did that ever matter to the political left that\u00a0continues to feed the fiction<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0man is setting his planet on fire?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going back more than 100 years, we can see from the data that\u00a0today\u2019s hurricane activity<\/strong>, defined as a\u00a0hurricane making landfall in the continental U.S.<\/strong>, is\u00a0roughly the same as it was<\/a>\u00a0at the turn of the previous century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
