rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were immediately attacked<\/a>\u00a0by the premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan as being \u201cunconstitutional\u201d and \u201cunachievable.\u201d Although there have been varying estimates of how much the transformation will cost \u2014 with Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault disingenuously claiming Canadians\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/news\/ottawa-says-higher-electric-costs-coming-with-plan-to-phase-down-fossil-fuels-from-grid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">will save money<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<strong>switching away from fossil fuels (which his carbon tax has artificially inflated in price)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 there can be little question that it would target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">are\u00a0<strong>not endowed<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0with the geographical features that permit an\u00a0<strong>abundance of hydroelectricity.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Nor<\/strong>\u00a0do they have\u00a0<strong>a legacy of nuclear power,<\/strong>\u00a0like Ontario does. Saskatchewan\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.saskpower.com\/Our-Power-Future\/Our-Electricity\/Electrical-System\/Where-Your-Power-Comes-From\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">currently relies<\/a>\u00a0on fossil fuels for more than three-quarters of its electricity supply.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Alberta also relies heavily on fossil fuels<\/strong>, but\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/calgary\/alberta-clean-electricity-power-grid-charts-context-1.6933163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is considerably greener<\/a>\u00a0than a decade ago. This\u00a0<strong>spurred a wave of deregulation in many western countries, including Canada,<\/strong>\u00a0which opened up sectors such as telecom and air travel, driving down prices, increasing choice and reinvigorating the economy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In this country, both Alberta and\u00a0<strong>Ontario experimented with electrical deregulation,<\/strong>\u00a0with varying degrees of success. Ontario\u2019s competitive market opened in 2002,<strong>\u00a0but was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electricity_policy_of_Ontario#Ontario's_short_experiment_with_competitive_retail_markets\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">short-lived<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0with the government quickly succumbing to political pressure over rising prices that were largely caused by unrelated factors<strong>. Alberta<\/strong>\u00a0also caved to pressure that resulted in numerous market interventions before prices had time to stabilize, but was\u00a0<strong>largely successful at creating a competitive\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberta.ca\/alberta-electricity-overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">electrical generation market<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and giving consumers some choice on the retail side.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#e81515\" class=\"has-inline-color\">But a competitive market is antithetical to the type of overbearing control<br>the Trudeau Liberals are looking to exert over electrical generation.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Not only will<strong>\u00a0the new clean electricity regulations dictate<\/strong>\u00a0what type of\u00a0<strong>generators<\/strong>\u00a0can be used,\u00a0<strong>preventing<\/strong>\u00a0companies and governments from striking a<strong>\u00a0balance between the environment and affordability<\/strong>, they represent the latest change in a<strong>\u00a0constantly shifting, and increasingly murky, set of environmental regulations<\/strong>\u00a0that will only serve\u00a0<strong>to scare away investors.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" industry-specific emissions caps<\/strong>\u00a0on oil and gas, introduced clean fuel standards,\u00a0<strong>banned<\/strong>\u00a0the sale of new\u00a0<strong>gas-powered vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0by 2035 and made it virtually\u00a0<strong>impossible to build new energy infrastructure<\/strong>, all while giving tens of billions of taxpayer dollars to favoured industries to produce products
