troubling\u00a0<strong>double standard<\/strong>\u00a0is applied to the acceptability of individual actions and those of political agents. An\u00a0<strong>individual declaring an emergency when none exists<\/strong>, e.g., shouting \u201cfire\u201d in a crowded cinema, would lead to rightful\u00a0<strong>punishment<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>yet public officials can do so without attracting the same scrutiny.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/07\/1139162\">United Nations Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio\u00a0<strong>Guterres<\/strong><\/a>, \u201cthe era of global warming has ended\u201d and\u00a0<strong>\u201cthe era of global boiling has arrived.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Of course, this statement was made with little or no sense of perspective or the possibility that\u00a0<strong>any sensible human would challenge or refute it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This comment is the latest reference relating to what is and has been going on with the weather and climate. After the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.climate.gov\/news-features\/climate-qa\/why-did-earth%E2%80%99s-surface-temperature-stop-rising-past-decade\">warming showed a slowdown<\/a>;<a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/global-warming-vs-climate-change\/\">&nbsp;<strong>climate change<\/strong><\/a><strong>&nbsp;became the operative term, but this was found to be insufficiently alarming.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rclutz.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/08\/us-temps-outlook-august-2022-and-23.gif\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rclutz.files.wordpress.com\/2023\/08\/us-temps-outlook-august-2022-and-23.gif?w=723&#038;h=724&#038;fit=1000%2C724\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32614\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In turn, climate action became the necessary antidote to a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/facts-about-climate-emergency\">climate emergency<\/a>\u201d or \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-crisis\">climate crisis<\/a>.\u201d Having\u00a0<strong>gone full circle<\/strong>, with the focus<strong>\u00a0back to the fetish with high temperatures<\/strong>\u00a0during\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iopscience.iop.org\/article\/10.1088\/1748-9326\/aab94a\">a seasonal, localized and predictable heatwave<\/a>, the assertion is that we are in the midst of climate boiling.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Even with no knowledge of science, per se, recipe books point out that\u00a0<strong>\u201cboiling\u201d occurs when water is heated to 212\u00ba Fahrenheit (100\u00ba Celsius) at sea level<\/strong>. For his part, it may be that the UN Boss knows that water will boil at lower temperatures at higher elevations, but he is unlikely to have been at such altitudes in his native Portugal to observe a boiling point close to recent global averages.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Although it is common for references regarding current weather to be over-stated, it does not necessarily indicate changes or trends in climatic conditions. Persuasion in search of cooperative arrangements is surely what should be expected of a liberal, representative democracy, but this is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/the-populist-challenge-to-liberal-democracy\/\">threatened just as much by \u201cLeft\u201d as well as \u201cRight\u201d populism<\/a>.\u00a0 It turns out the use of extreme terms in the climate debate is not about either exaggeration or hyperbole, since<strong>\u00a0exaggeration or hyperbole requires there be an element of truth in statements.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#e81515\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Terms used to express the effect of high temperatures on the human body<br>are misleading, disingenuous, and factually untrue.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong>Ginning up fear<\/strong>\u00a0is a well-known technique of\u00a0<strong>propaganda to support a narrative<\/strong>, as is the case of reports of\u00a0<strong>momentary weather conditions as though they presage eventual or irrevocable climatic changes.<\/strong>\u00a0An example of how an isolated weather event is portrayed as if it were evidence of a generalized view of overall conditions can be seen in a recent report on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/07\/26\/1190218132\/florida-ocean-temperatures-101-marine-life-damage\">National Public Radio<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Noting the measurements of<strong>&nbsp;a single water temperature sensor in Manatee Bay<\/strong>, near the Everglades National Park, reached 101.1 degrees, the data were&nbsp;<strong>declared to be \u201cstartling\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;as if they reflected high average temperatures in the Florida Bay area. It went on to declare that \u201cscorching\u201d temperatures \u201ccould\u201d pose a major risk to coral and other marine life.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/external-content.duckduckgo.com\/iu\/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.tes.com%2Fsites%2Fdefault%2Ffiles%2Ffire_alram.gif&amp;f=1&amp;nofb=1&amp;ipt=e197b75af69a6a457b5c25ab20a3a5ea11a68acfba4ee96211c24a1df7486723&amp;ipo=images\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>It is noteworthy that the word<strong>\u00a0\u201ccould\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in this context has no real content since such\u00a0<strong>conditional<\/strong>\u00a0expressions provide<strong>\u00a0no insight into or substantiation of the likelihood<\/strong>\u00a0of the referred event. Supporters of this narrative\u00a0<strong>expect most citizens to be uncurious<\/strong>\u00a0and to willingly accept assertions of political officials for the purpose of misleading or frightening them, so they\u00a0<strong>submit to whatever remedial public policies are imposed.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In all events, there was<strong>\u00a0no data to support the claim of \u201cstartling\u201d water conditions<\/strong>\u00a0in the rest of Florida Bay. Further, the claim that the temperatures are \u201cscorching\u201d is confusing, at best, since injury from water burns is commonly known as scalding.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Concerning<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/antiscald.com\/index.php?route=information\/information&amp;information_id=15\">scalding<\/a>, second degree burns<\/strong>\u00a0can occur\u00a0<strong>from exposure for 3 seconds to water of 140\u00b0F,<\/strong>\u00a0while a third degree burn requires at least 5 seconds of exposure at same temperature. As it is, the\u00a0<strong>temperature of sea water<\/strong>\u00a0measured from a single buoy off the Florida coast<strong>\u00a0far from those temperatures<\/strong>\u00a0and is variable over the course of 24 hours, up to 10 degrees less at night.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Of course, the\u00a0<strong>heat in the ambient air is also far away<\/strong>\u00a0from what would be \u201cboiling\u201d or \u201cscorching\u201d temperatures. But it turns out that there is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0306456522001942\">no \u201csettled science\u201d<\/a>\u00a0on the maximum ambient temperatures that will cause heat distress.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>In fact, more is known about the\u00a0<strong>effect of low ambient temperatures<\/strong>\u00a0on the human body. If the temperature falls below the lower limit, 82.4\u00ba Fahrenheit (28\u00ba Celsius), more energy is used to hold internal temperature at the optimum, and if temperatures are too low,\u00a0<strong>shivering occurs causing involuntary muscular contractions to generate heat.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Thermoregulation of body temperature is necessary to sustain human life and survival of human cells to thrive rather than to overheat or die.\u00a0<strong>The human body engages in homeostasis<\/strong>\u00a0to maintain balance by keeping core internal temperature within a safe range, no matter what temperatures are outside the body, otherwise organ failures might occur.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Results of research conducted at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pure.roehampton.ac.uk\/portal\/en\/publications\/the-metabolic-upper-critical-temperature-of-the-human-thermoneutr\">University of Roehampton<\/a>\u00a0indicates ambient temperatures exceeding 104\u00ba Fahrenheit (40\u00ba Celsius) might cause some humans to be unable to shed excessive heat so that body functions become abnormal. It points out that there is\u00a0<strong>a \u201cthermoneutral\u201d zone of temperatures within which the body has no need to increase metabolic rate or use more energy<\/strong>\u00a0to achieve the normal core temperature of 98.6\u00ba Fahrenheit (37\u00ba Celsius).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While high temperatures can impact cardiovascular health (e.g., during heatwaves or while fighting fires), it is not a matter of climate change.
