A dead whale washed ashore on Takanassee Beach in New Jersey in the early evening yesterday. Police blocked off the area so tractors could be brought in to remove it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were sitting on the beach yesterday, and I noticed it when people started running up to it,\u201d\u00a0said<\/a>\u00a0Soraya Nimaroff, who lives nearby. \u201cI\u2019m very sad. It is very sad.\u201d [bold, emphasis, links added]<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday marked the\u00a060th known\u00a0whale death on the East Coast<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0since Dec 1, 2022<\/strong>. Whale strandings have\u00a0increased markedly since 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0North Atlantic right whales are\u00a0headed for extinction<\/a><\/strong>. Their population has\u00a0dropped to 340<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There have been\u00a0200 humpback strandings<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a098 strandings of right whales since 2017<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt caused us concern enough to ask, \u2018What is happening?\u2019\u201d said Cindy Zipf, executive director of the Long Branch-based nonprofit Clean Ocean Action (COA). \u201cWe looked into what was different about this December and early January.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0only thing she and other researchers found was\u00a0offshore wind exploration<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe looked at shipping, and\u00a0shipping didn\u2019t seem to be any different<\/strong>,\u201d said Zipf. \u201cThe same fishermen were fishing<\/strong>. And\u00a0the only thing we noticed was the\u00a0number of IHAs that had been issued<\/a>.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IHAs are\u00a0\u201cincidental harassment authorizations<\/a>,\u201d or\u00a0permits to harass whales.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the period since June 2022<\/strong>, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration\u00a0(NOAA) has bizarrely and cruelly given<\/strong>\u00a0the wind industry\u00a012<\/a>\u00a0separate one-year IHAs<\/strong>\u00a0that collectively\u00a0permit the harassment of\u00a0190 critically endangered right whales<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another\u00a0ten applications for additional IHAs<\/strong>\u00a0are currently\u00a0pending.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to NOAA,\u00a0blunt and sharp force trauma killed the\u00a0humpback whale<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0found floating in Raritan Bay on May 31. Scientists found\u00a0lacerations and broken bones across her body<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
