She says scientists have an incentive to exaggerate risk to pursue \u201cfame and fortune.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"723\" height=\"407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vVi01vJ4nxM?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Climate alarmists insist there\u2019s a \u201cscientific consensus\u201d that says climate change is a crisis, and man causes it! Researcher Judith Curry tells me, \u201cit\u2019s a manufactured consensus.\u201d<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She knows about that because she once spread alarm about climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Media loved her when she published a study that seemed to show a dramatic increase in hurricane intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe found that the percent of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes had doubled,\u201d says Curry. \u201cThis was picked up by the media,\u201d and then climate alarmists realized, \u201cOh, here is the way to do it. Tie extreme weather events to global warming!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, this hysteria is your fault!\u201d I tell her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot really,\u201d she smiles. \u201cThey would have picked up on it anyways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Curry\u2019s \u201cmore intense\u201d hurricanes gave them fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was adopted by the environmental advocacy groups and the alarmists and I was treated like a rock star,\u201d Curry recounts. \u201cFlown all over the place to meet with politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then some researchers pointed out gaps in her research \u2014 years with low levels of hurricanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike a good scientist, I investigated,\u201d says Curry. She realized that the critics were right. \u201cPart of it was bad data. Part of it is natural climate variability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curry was the unusual researcher who looked at criticism of her work and actually concluded \u201cthey had a point.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the Climategate scandal taught her that other climate researchers weren\u2019t so open-minded. Alarmist scientists\u2019 aggressive attempts to hide data suggesting climate change is\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0a crisis were revealed in leaked emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUgly things,\u201d says Curry. \u201cAvoiding Freedom of Information Act requests. Trying to get journal editors fired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It made Curry realize that there is a \u201cclimate change industry\u201d set up to reward alarmism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe origins go back to the \u2026 U.N. environmental program,\u201d says Curry. Some U.N. officials were motivated by \u201canti-capitalism. They hated the oil companies and seized on the climate change issue to move their policies along.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.N. created the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe IPCC wasn\u2019t supposed to focus on any\u00a0<em>benefits<\/em>\u00a0of warming. The IPCC\u2019s mandate was to look for\u00a0<em>dangerous<\/em>\u00a0human-caused climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen the national funding agencies directed all the funding \u2026\u00a0<em>assuming<\/em>\u00a0there are dangerous impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers quickly figured out that the way to get funded was to make alarmist claims about \u201cman-made climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is how \u201cmanufactured consensus\u201d happens. Even if a skeptic did get funding, it\u2019s harder to publish because journal editors are alarmists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe editor of the journal Science wrote this political rant,\u201d says Curry. She even said, \u201cThe time for debate has ended.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat kind of message does that give?\u201d adds Curry. Then she answers her own question: \u201cPromote the alarming papers! Don\u2019t even send the other ones out for review.
