(See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/17477891.2023.2239807?journalCode=tenh20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pielke Jr. here<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/global-weather-and-climate-disasters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>)\u00a0 Are they increasing worldwide or are they declining?\u00a0 Are there more or fewer weather-related, climate-related disasters?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The go-to source for statistics on worldwide disasters for (nearly) everyone is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.emdat.be\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EM-DAT \u2013 The International Disaster Database<\/a>.\u00a0 For years, the UN, IPCC and the climate-crisis-complicit mass media used the database just as presented at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/natural-disasters-by-type\">Our World in Data<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"508\" data-attachment-id=\"273375\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/climatescience.press\/?attachment_id=273375\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-557.png?fit=720%2C508&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"720,508\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"image-557\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-557.png?fit=720%2C508&amp;ssl=1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-557.png?resize=720%2C508&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-273375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-557.png?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/climatescience.press\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/image-557.png?resize=300%2C212&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This version led to the wild claims that disasters had quadrupled or quintupled since the 1970s.\u00a0 There was a problem with that view, of course \u2013 it was not true in the real world, only in the pretty-picture graph.\u00a0 In 2019, I investigated this and an email exchange with Regina Below, Database Manager and Documentalist at CRED\/EM-DAT, revealed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I asked:\u00a0 \u201cMy guess would be that 1970 to 1998 represents\u00a0<strong>an increase in REPORTING<\/strong>\u00a0and not in actual Natural Disasters.\u00a0Can you confirm this please \u2014 or correct me if I am wrong.\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Regina Below replied: \u201c\u00a0<strong>You are right, it is an increase in the reporting\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out that the data collection system was not fully functional until about 2000 and comparisons of years and totals before that time are not appropriate. \u00a0Later, others confirmed this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/17477891.2023.2239807?journalCode=tenh20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in scientific journal articles<\/a>\u00a0(though they only needed to ask).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But what about the data after 2000?\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Well, what do\u00a0<em>you<\/em>\u00a0think of when you see the word \u201cdisaster\u201d?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here is EM-DAT\u2019s definition:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201c<\/strong><em>EM-DAT defines disasters as situations or events which overwhelm local capacity, necessitating a request for external assistance at the national or international level. Disasters are unforeseen and often sudden events that cause significant damage, destruction, and human suffering.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that seems alright, I would agree with that but for this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201c<em>Inclusion criteria<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>EM-DAT focuses on major disasters<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><em>EM-DAT globally records at the country level human and economic losses for disasters with&nbsp;<u>at least one<\/u>&nbsp;of the following criteria:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>10 fatalities;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>100 affected people;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>a declaration of state of emergency;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>a call for international assistance.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only takes&nbsp;<strong>one<\/strong>&nbsp;of those conditions to make it into the disaster database.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing to notice is that the overall shape of this bar graph of the number of reported disasters is mostly affected by floods (light blue at the bottom of each year\u2019s bar) which make up about \u00bd of the total number of disasters each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, I might not consider it a major disaster that a slum in the Dominican Republic is flooded by normal tropical rains (because it sits on a repeatedly-flooded flood plain where the land is unusable thus free) \u2013 even though more than a hundred people were affected (which, in current use, means\u00a0<em>twenty<\/em>\u00a0houses.).\u00a0 It is something that happens almost every year.\u00a0 In many years, it happens multiple times in multiple places. In the DR, a flood affecting twenty houses is hardly remarkable, barely making the local press.\u00a0 It is certainly a disaster for the residents but for inclusion in an international disaster database?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EM-DAT reports come from international organizations, UN agencies, national and state-level governments, and\u00a0<strong>Agence France-Presse<\/strong>\u00a0(AFP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The definitions used can be found at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/public.emdat.be\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EM-DAT\u2019s \u00a0\u201cAbout\u201d page<\/a>.\u00a0 Several of the criteria \u00a0can generously be described as\u00a0<strong><em>ambiguous<\/em><\/strong>:\u00a0\u00a0<em>\u201cThe\u00a0<strong>ambiguity<\/strong>\u00a0in the definitions and the different criteria and methods of estimation produce vastly different numbers, which are rarely comparable.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider \u201cExtreme temperature\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0using the criteria \u201c100 affected class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ambiguity of \u201cExtreme temperature\u201d and \u201c100 affected people\u201d \u2013 how many heat waves affected more than 100 people?\u00a0\u00a0 AFP reports \u201chundreds of people sweating under heat wave, eleven deaths suspected to be heat-related\u201d and there could be a new entry in the disaster database.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Agence France-Presse (AFP)<\/em>\u00a0is a partner in the climate propaganda cabal called\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/coveringclimatenow.org\/partners\/partner-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Covering Climate Now<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>dedicated to spreading climate crisis alarm through making \u00a0\u201cEvery story\u2026a climate story\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even with the ambiguity of definitions used in the EM-DAT criteria and the possible inflation of disaster numbers by media advocacy, total number of disasters are still down-trending since the first year with usable date, 2000 (graph above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/natural-disasters\" target=\"_blank\"
