class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A new peer-reviewed paper out this week by\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/17477891.2023.2239807\"><em>Alimonti and Mariani<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0asks whether global disasters have increased. Their answer is that they have not (and if the name sounds familiar, it is the same Alimonti whose paper is being\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/think-of-the-implications-of-publishing\"><em>improperly retracted<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0\u2014 more fresh info on that in the coming days).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>As I read their paper today I noticed that the time series they reported from the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emdat.be\/\"><em>EM-DAT database<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0looked a bit different than that I had last explored and\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/rogerpielkejr.substack.com\/p\/dont-believe-the-hype\"><em>presented here<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0at THB late last year. So today I downloaded the most recent\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emdat.be\/\"><em>data from EM-DAT<\/em><\/a><em>, and indeed there has been some changes to the most recent three years, presumably due to late entries into the database (however I will enquire as all post-hoc dataset updates should be documented).
