Both chew up monumental volumes of minerals, chemicals, rare earths and energy just to create the panels and turbines. Both leave monumental volumes of waste when turbines and panels are spent \u2013 after a decade or so \u2013 much of it incapable of being recycled and plenty of it monumentally toxic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alex Epstein provides a helpful wrap up of why wind and solar are the world\u2019s greatest enviro-frauds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cGreen Energy\u201d is neither energy nor green<\/strong><br>Energy Talking Points<br>Alex Epstein<br>2 June 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGreen energy\u201d has 2 problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. It\u2019s not really energy: It doesn\u2019t provide reliable energy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. It\u2019s not really green: It has a huge \u201cenvironmental impact\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal of \u201cgreen energy\u201d is to pretend to support abundant energy but to actually oppose it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The \u201cgreen energy\u201d movement claims that it wants cost-effective energy\u2014affordable, reliable, plentiful\u2014just without fossil fuels\u2019 pollution or GHG emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this is contradicted by its hostility toward clean, non-carbon nuclear and hydro\u2014the most proven alternatives to fossil fuels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You might expect the \u201cgreen energy\u201d movement to be the #1 supporter of clean, non-carbon nuclear and hydroelectric energy, but instead, it is the #1 opponent. \u201cGreen\u201d groups have opposed nuclear for decades (leading to crippling costs) and worked to shut down hydroelectric dams.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Why does the \u201cgreen\u201d movement oppose nuclear and hydro?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is because \u201cgreen\u201d solar and wind are just so cost-effective and so \u201cgreen\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. Solar and wind have not proven to be cost-effective at all, and in many ways, they are the least \u201cgreen\u201d form of energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cGreen energy\u201d isn\u2019t really energy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calling solar and wind \u201cgreen energy\u201d makes them seem like other forms of energy, just \u201cgreen.\u201d But they\u2019re not. All other forms of energy provide reliable energy\u2014real energy\u2014whereas solar and wind are unreliable parasites of reliable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Despite claims that solar and wind are rapidly replacing fossil fuels, they provide less than 5% of world energy\u2014only electricity, \u2155 of energy\u2014and, crucially, even that small percentage depends on huge subsidies and reliable (mostly fossil-fueled) power plants (1).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Solar and wind\u2019s basic problem is unreliability, to the point they can go near zero at any time. Thus they don\u2019t replace reliable power, they parasitize on it. This is why they need huge subsidies and why no grid is near 50% solar and wind without huge parasitism on reliable neighbors (2).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The popular idea that we can use mostly or only solar and wind with sufficient battery backup is not being tried anywhere because it\u2019s economically absurd. But today\u2019s \u201cgreen energy\u201d is not real energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If solar and wind ever become truly cost-effective, you can be certain of one thing: the \u201cgreen energy\u201d movement will oppose them as insufficiently \u201cgreen\u201d given their huge \u201cenvironmental impacts.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGreen energy\u201d isn\u2019t really green<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If solar and wind became cost-effective and deployed on a large scale, they would have a level of \u201cenvironmental impact\u201d from mining and land use that would make the \u201cgreen\u201d movement oppose them. In fact, this is already happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cGreen\u201d means minimal or nonexistent \u201cenvironmental impact.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because sunlight and wind are dilute sources of energy\u2014they take up more space and use more of many materials than fossil fuels or nuclear. The world uses over 165,000 TWh of energy per year, which requires ~19 billion kW of power on average. An optimistic, real-world power density for solar projects is 10 Watts per square meter. To power the world, you\u2019d need ~1.8 million square kilometers of solar PV projects (5).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If 1.8 million square kilometers of solar panels doesn\u2019t seem like much, note that it is more than all cities, towns, villages, and human infrastructure combined (~1.5 million square kilometers). E.g., the Biden administration recently shut down a prime \u201cgreen energy\u201d mining site in Minnesota (9).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If \u201cgreen\u201d solar and wind aren\u2019t really energy, and if they have so much environmental impact that the \u201cgreen\u201d movement opposes them in practice, then why does the green movement so enthusiastically support them rhetorically? To hide its real goal: radically reducing energy use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGreen\u201d\u2014\u201cminimal human impact\u201d\u2014is a fundamentally anti-energy idea. Energy is \u201cthe capacity to do work,\u201d which means transforming\u2014impacting\u2014our environment. More energy use equals more impact. If you don\u2019t want us to impact Earth you ultimately must oppose every form of energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The fundamental hostility of the \u201cgreen\u201d movement to energy explains why throughout its history it has never supported current, cost-effective sources of energy and only \u201csupported\u201d imaginary sources of energy that might exist in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cGreen\u201d leaders supported nuclear\u2014until it became cost-effective, at which point they demonized and criminalized it. \u201cGreen\u201d leaders supported natural gas\u2014until it became cost-effective on a global scale thanks to shale energy tech, at which point they demonized it as \u201cfracking\u201d (10).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Because the \u201cgreen\u201d movement is anti-energy, any enthusiasm its leaders express for fusion is phony; while they may claim to want clean, cheap, abundant energy before it exists, they will not like the impact it has once it exists. And in the past, green leaders admitted this (11).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Amory Lovins, the leader of the modern \u201cgreen energy\u201d movement, said in the 1970s: \u201cIf you ask me, it\u2019d be little short of disastrous for us to discover a source of clean, cheap, abundant energy, because of what we would do with it\u201d (12).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image
