upside.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Then Siemens chief executive Joe Kaeser said there was \u201ca clear and compelling industrial logic\u201d that would make \u201crenewable energy more cost-effective\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yet the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/06\/25\/britain-offshore-wind-industry-at-risk\/\"><em>turbine industry has proved as fickle as the wind<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Siemens warned on Monday that it was facing a \u20ac4.5bn (\u00a33.9bn) loss this year as a result of issues within its wind turbine division.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Wrinkles in rotor blades and faulty gears are among the problems uncovered, which have led to operating issues and warranty claims from buyers.\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2023\/03\/05\/why-britain-suddenly-blowing-cold-wind-power-revolution\/\"><em>Inflation has only added to headaches<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The admissions of failures wiped as much as \u20ac6bn off the value of Siemens on Monday.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The German industrial powerhouse has been in the wind power market for almost two decades and Gamesa, which was until last year a joint venture, traces its roots in the industry back to the 1970s.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Yet a rapid expansion of its manufacturing in recent years has left the combined business over-extended.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of Siemens Gamesa, admitted: \u201cWe sold turbines too quickly,\u201d describing the company as a \u201cvictim of our own ambitions\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Siemens Gamesa manufactures blades for wind turbines, which can measure over 100m in length and are made up of many layers of material.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The technology must be highly precise and testing uncovered flaws causing \u201cabnormal vibrations\u201d, which could lead to damages and other issues.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Jochen Eickholt, chief executive of Siemens Gamesa, has put the issues down to \u201cwrinkles\u201d within layers of the blades and has blamed suppliers. Some have been cut off in response.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Hiccups weren\u2019t picked up earlier because the company was focused on the rapid introduction of new turbines and the ramping up of capacity, Siemens Energy chief executive Christian Bruch said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Kathryn Porter, an independent analyst at energy consultancy Watt Logic, said: \u201cThere\u2019s been pressure from the developers to have bigger turbines, because then obviously it\u2019s easier to build, but there have been a lot of warranty problems.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cNow you\u2019re getting people saying behind the scenes, maybe we need to have a pause on this bigger and bigger turbine thing because they just keep breaking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Profitability has been weak in the industry for a long time, she said\u2026.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The German company is not alone in struggling: its competitors and its customers are also battling a more expensive landscape for the green energy industry.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Vestas, the world\u2019s biggest wind turbine maker, lost \u20ac1.5bn last year after a surge in costs, particularly metal prices.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Chief executive Henrik Andersen said in May: \u201cThe wind industry remains challenged by political uncertainty, slow permitting processes and high inflation, which we expect to continue throughout 2023.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Operators face significant challenges too.
