Regents<\/em>\u00a0confirmed that the law firm filing the bulk of these suits is already being paid millions of dollars to file them. These millions first came as \u201ccharitable grants\u201d for, oddly, purposes that differed year by year in reports to the IRS but which we know,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/titanic-revelation-dicaprio-nabs-starring-role-in-private-financing-of-government-climate-lawsuits\/\">from the UCLA emails<\/a>, was to underwrite the lawsuits. Then, after a law professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/michaelkrauss\/2020\/07\/28\/using-charitable-funds-to-subsidize-legislation-through-litigation\/?sh=5f2771413342\">raised an eyebrow<\/a>\u00a0about this, the loot was soon being split halvsies as \u201ccharitable grants\u201d and compensation to a contractor. Then, after the UCLA revelations, the operation shifted to the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/11\/16\/caitlin-sutherland-arabella-advisors-form-990s\/\">Democratic Dark Money Juggernaut,\u201d \u201cthe \u2018mothership\u2019 behind a network of Democratic dark money nonprofit groups\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CLW said this about that in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/cunning-or-clueless-climate-recruiter-pitch-the-plaintiffs-lawyers-only-get-paid-when-there-is-a-successful-settlement\/\">post<\/a>\u00a0about a NJ recruiting video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But note the stunner. In a presentation to activists and potential governmental plaintiffs, at 1:01, the same lawyer says \u201cThe lawyers only get paid if and when there is a successful settlement of judgement at the end.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Um, no.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The raging issue is,\u00a0<em>what did the politicians know and when did they know it?<\/em>\u00a0Are they knowingly double-dipping to pursue major donors\u2019 pet project, or have they been kept in the dark about the payments already being made? Was Keith Ellison (et al.) a dupe, or was he in on the gag? The pols promise massive sums to a firm, which is already being paid to file these lawsuits, to file these lawsuits, only\u00a0<em>if they and prevail in or settle\u2026<\/em>but out of purported taxpayer damages (Of course, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/another-window-into-the-climate-litigation-world\/\">video<\/a>\u00a0available at CLW shows participants joking about how much money they get and how they might use it to buy stuff they want). But, don\u2019t they know what\u2019s going on? Who faces peril here depends on what the answer to that is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These two issues of New Jersey and contingency fee arrangements met when the appointed Attorney General of New Jersey, Mathew Platkin,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/new-jersey-files-latest-cci-inspired-climate-suit\/\">filed<\/a>\u00a0a lawsuit last fall within three weeks of being confirmed by the state senate. That\u2019s quite a priority for someone who had failed to mention such an undertaking during that confirmation process (one of these recruiting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Attributing-Climate-Change-Impacts-to-Fossil-Fuel-Companies_50MB.mp4\">videos<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/How-To-Talk-About-Climate-Accountability_91.5MB.mp4\">available<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/RESIZED-Fossil-Fuel-Industry-Deception-Webinar_-98MB.mp4\">at<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/climatelitigationwatch.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/REDUCED2-Jan-2022-NJ-Climate-Liability-Coalition-kickoff-Leaders-for-Climate-Accountability.mp4\">CLW<\/a>\u00a0shows locals indicating the AG is just doing Governor Phil Murphy\u2019s bidding). Such details before or while under oath just lead to more questions. Or maybe it just occurred to him later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless, the Office does not want the public to see the terms of and relevant disclosures in its agreement with the law firm. Now, GAO has filed suit to obtain the state\u2019s contract with the firm. The complaint explains things and can be read\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/govoversight.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/FILED-COMPLAINT-OTSC.pdf\">here<\/a>.
