Growing up to 98 feet (30 meters) and ready for harvesting in just three to four years from planting, balsa holds the\u00a0<strong>promise for high profits for those who grow them.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Adding to its value,\u00a0<strong>balsa wood is flexible and light yet very strong,<\/strong>\u00a0making it an ideal material for manufacturing bridges, skis, boats and wind turbine propellers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\"><em><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#e81515\" class=\"has-inline-color\">In an ironic tragedy, however, the rapid expansion of wind energy has led to<br>increasing demand for windmills and balsa wood to build them.<\/mark><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Now, the tropical tree is facing exploitation and being cleared from Amazon forests,\u00a0<strong>causing potentially more environmental problems than the windmills it creates can solve.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Logging Amazon rainforests to create massive wind turbine propellers is\u00a0<strong>the opposite of sustainable.<\/strong>\u00a0Meanwhile<strong>, birds and bats<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 many species of which are already endangered \u2014 are suffering.
