Rakoen Maertens (@RakoenMaertens) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RakoenMaertens\/status\/1684200512294473730?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This tweet links to 2 irrelevant Cambridge University sites, plus another 15-tweet thread which reproduces the un-copy-and-pastable abstract of a paper with a long title which I leave you to read for yourself, and finally to an on-line self-completion survey inviting you to rate 16 or 20 news headlines as either \u2018Fake News\u2019 or \u2018Real News\u2019 in order to test your \u201cmisinformation susceptibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This has to be the worst-designed survey ever put out by academics since Lewandowsky\u2019s paper \u201cNASA faked the Moon Landing..\u201d paper, which is perhaps why he is pushing it. If it has really been scientifically established by Scientists at Cambridge that everything said by the Pew Research Center is infallibly true, why don\u2019t they just say so? It would save the rest of us a lot of ontological angst.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth one I tried: \u201cGlobal Warming Age Gap: Younger Americans Most Worried\u201d came from Gallup. They were bound to have a question or two about the climate, but here they were playing safe. Of course, younger Americans are the most worried about global warming. Anyone thinking that older Americans are the most worried can only be a Trump-voting victim of Koch Brother brainwashing and should be banned from social media, or \u201cthe Airwaves\u201d as they apparently say in Dutch.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many of the false\u00a0\u00a0statements can be identified on stylistic grounds, as having been written by clever lefty academics with an obsessive hatred of Trumpist populism, and for whom English is not their first language (\u201c..through the Airwaves,\u201d \u201c..Certain Vaccines are Loaded..\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This still leaves a number of questions to which the correct answer cannot be determined by stylistic features. Take Q.19: \u201cMorocco\u2019s King Appoints Committee Chief to Fight Poverty and Inequality.\u201d Well, knowing the King of Morocco as I do, I wouldn\u2019t put it past him. Although I wouldn\u2019t put it past him not to. Luckily, Google is at hand, and indeed, according to Reuters, he did.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A serious criticism of the survey is that knowledge of the \u201cright\u201d answers depends on a thorough knowledge of, and interest in, US culture and affairs.\u00a0\u00a0Take Q7: \u201cHyatt Will Remove Small Bottles from Hotel Bathrooms.\u201d Who the hell is Hyatt? And how would I know if he\u2019s removing small bottles from hotel rooms?\u00a0\u00a0No doubt if you\u2019re a UK-based Dutch academic flitting from conference to conference, your knowledge of American hotel rooms is boundless. For the rest of us, these statements sound like enigmatic messages from another planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving aside the fact that the questions betray the most heartfelt passions, concerns and anguish of the tiny proportion of the world that reads the NYT or Guardian, works in politics, PR, academia or the media, and who won\u2019t rest until every Brexiteer and Deplorable has ceased spouting his unacceptable opinions and crept back under his MAGA-slimed stone, there\u2019s quite a lot to criticise about this survey from the point of view of methodology.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take Q.13: \u201cNew Study: Clear Relationship Between Eye Color and Intelligence.\u201d I\u2019ve never seen a report on the relation between eye colour &amp; intelligence. I know nothing about the subject, &amp; the only honest response would be \u201cdon\u2019t know.\u201d But there\u2019s no don\u2019t know\u201d box to tick. Honesty is not an option.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So let\u2019s calculate:\u00a0<em>\u201cMy interrogators are leftwing academics, trying to spot whether I\u2019m a white supremacist, hiding my racism under the veneer of an interest in the importance of eye colour. So, False.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except that I\u2019m not being asked whether there\u2019s a relationship between eye colour and intelligence, but whether there\u2019s a\u00a0<em>new study<\/em>\u00a0claiming there is. Which of course I can\u2019t possibly know, not being a world expert on eye colour, and never having written such a paper myself.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Q.2 consists of two completely different questions, on\u00a0Control\u00a0of the Media\u00a0by the\u00a0Military-Industrial Complex, and by\u00a0The Major Oil\u00a0Companies. Yet you\u2019re supposed to answer with a simple true of false. Again, if I\u2019d produced a questionnaire like this as a junior market research executive, I\u2019d have been told I was in the wrong job. And these are professors at Cambridge for Gaia\u2019s sake.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A final example: The question compilers seem not to understand the necessity of distinguishing between \u201call,\u201d \u201csome,\u201d \u201cany,\u201d and similar useful modifiers. Take Q.8: \u201cGovernment Officials Have Manipulated Stock Prices to Hide Scandals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, have they? Not to my knowledge. I\u2019m not even sure what the accusation means. But am I willing to vouch for the fact that\u00a0<em>no<\/em>\u00a0government official has\u00a0<em>ever<\/em>\u00a0manipulated stock prices, or that, if they have, it wasn\u2019t in order to hide scandals, but for the much more common purpose of making money from insider trading? These are deep waters for a survey that\u2019s supposed to take two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this trash would matter if it weren\u2019t for the fact that Misinformation is one of the great Perils of the Age, and that the paper written by the authors of this survey:\u00a0<strong>\u201cThe Misinformation Susceptibility Test (MIST): a psychometrically validated measure of news veracity discernment\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0aims to divide the \u201cdiscerning\u201d (i.e. credulous) sheep from the \u201cyes butt..\u201d sceptical goats, at the moment that the EU is installing a system of multimillion euro fines on media that fail to ban people who give the wrong answer to surveys like this, on subjects raised in questions like these, concerning such things as the relative strength of belief in global warming, the purity of vaccines, the honesty of governments, and the infallibility of the mainstream media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I tell myself I\u2019m not bothered, it\u2019s only a bunch of unusually thick Cambridge professors.
