So yes, it\u2019s hot. Yet, thanks to a relatively old invention \u2014 air conditioning \u2014 I\u2019m able to work in comfort. The 10-minute bike ride back home will be tougher than usual, but it won\u2019t kill me. Like most people here, I consider these temperatures to be a nuisance \u2014 but that\u2019s about it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>According to the news, however, I should be terribly concerned \u2014 terrified, in fact. Everyone\u2019s running headline stories about the \u201cextreme\u201d, \u201crecord-breaking\u201d and \u201cdeadly\u201d hot weather sweeping across Asia, the US and, most notably, Europe. Here, the heatwave was unofficially named Cerberus, the multi-headed dog that guards the gates of Hades, before being replaced by Charon, the man who ferries the dead there. Rome is being called the<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/europe-heatwave-cerberus-italy-weather-temperatures-2023-hn66prdrl\"><em>\u00a0\u201cinfernal city\u201d<\/em><\/a><em>. To be honest, I can think of several much more hellish places around the world at the moment \u2014 cities plagued by poverty, terrorism and war.
