The hysteria was started when climate sensationalist media outlets in Germany and elsewhere, like the\u00a0Relotius<\/a>\u00a0Spiegel,\u00a0uncritically cited<\/a>\u00a0a\u00a0sloppily and manipulatively formulated July 13 report from the European Space Agency (ESA)<\/a>, that first referred to \u201cair\u201d temperature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temperatures are sizzling across Europe this week amid an intense and prolonged period of heat. And it\u2019s only just begun. Italy, Spain, France, Germany and Poland are all facing a major heatwave with\u00a0<\/em>air<\/strong>\u00a0temperatures\u00a0<\/em>expected<\/a>\u00a0to climb to 48\u00b0C on the islands of Sicily and Sardinia \u2013 potentially the hottest temperatures ever recorded in Europe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The original ESA report continued, only later specifying that it was in fact referring to surface temperature (emphasis added):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The animation below uses data from the\u00a0<\/em>Copernicus Sentinel-3<\/a>\u00a0mission\u2019s radiometer instrument and shows the\u00a0<\/em>land surface<\/strong>\u00a0temperature across Italy between 9 and 10 July. As the image clearly shows, in some cities\u00a0<\/em>the surface of the land<\/strong>\u00a0exceeded 45\u00b0C, including Rome, Naples, Taranto and Foggia. Along the east slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, many temperatures were recorded as over 50\u00b0C.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Meant here were\u00a0not<\/strong>\u00a0the standard temperatures recorded at 2 meters above ground level that we always here in daily weather reports, which are much cooler, but rather those right at the ground surface. That crucial difference went totally unnoticed by media and journalists, who reported of new record high temperatures. By the time the ploy was exposed by careful readers, the news had already gone around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the ESA\u00a0 issued a (vague) clarification explaining the difference between surface and air temperature at 2 meters above ground, yet continued to mislead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Land surface temperature<\/strong>\u00a0is how hot the \u2018surface\u2019 of Earth feels to the touch.\u00a0<\/em>Air temperature<\/strong>, given in our daily weather forecasts, is a measure of how hot the air is above the ground.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

The ESA did not bother to mention how the surface temperature is much hotter than the 2 meter air temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost intense climate lie\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat we experienced over the past days was most intense climate lie since temperature recording began,\u201d reported Germany\u2019s\u00a0Achtung Reichelt here<\/a>\u00a0on the implications of the ESA\u2019s sloppy, manipulative press release and the media firestorm that ensued: \u201cThe problem with that report is that none of it is true.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Sicily the temperature reached only 32\u00b0C over the weekend \u2013 a far cry from 48\u00b0C, which illustrates the great difference between ground surface temperature and readings taken 2 meters above the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once the trickery was exposed, Spiegel quietly changed the wording in its July 14 report:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiegel changed the text (left) from 48\u00b0C with \u201cmany heat deaths\u201d over to (right): \u201c48\u00b0C \u2026but that the measurements were not the usual air temperature \u2013 which can be considerably lower.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s clear that the authorities and media tries to pull a fast one on the public, but were caught again thanks to careful readers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
