Yesterday (13th of July),\u00a0Letzte Generation<\/em>\u00a0climate activists\u00a0forced their way through<\/a>\u00a0the fenced perimeter of the international airports at Hamburg and D\u00fcsseldorf with bolt cutters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They then used rented bicycles to make their way onto the tarmac where they glued themselves to taxiways, causing multiple flight cancellations and considerable delays precisely at the start of the school holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ordinary travellers experience airports as bizarre fortresses. They\u2019re routinely subject to arbitrary and invasive screenings by security personnel on the pretence that policing the amount of liquid in carry-on luggage is necessary to prevent terrorism. Apparently, though, even the most na\u00efve and inexperienced university students can just break into these terror-proof airfields with nothing more than standard tools available at every home improvement store, and move freely within them while wearing high-visibility orange reflective vests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A look at the\u00a0Letzte Generation<\/em>\u00a0website<\/a>\u00a0suggests we can expect more of this. Its\u00a0online recruitment form<\/a>\u00a0asks respondents what they\u2019re willing to do in order to combat climate catastrophe. Roles are listed in order of escalation \u2013 you can volunteer \u201cin the background\u201d or participate in \u201cprotest marches,\u201d which involve \u201cminimal risk\u201d. The more daring can \u201cblock streets\u201d, which interestingly is said to entail \u201climited risk,\u201d but that\u2019s not all. There\u2019s a still greater level for truly insane activists who wish to contribute \u201cspectacular\u201d acts of resistance involving \u201chigh personal risk\u201d. We can presume that the taxiway gluers represent the debut of the spectacular\u00a0Letzte Generation<\/em>\u00a0high-risk commando.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The action was a prelude to the midsummer blitz\u00a0Letzte Generation<\/em>\u00a0has planned before some of them depart for\u00a0their three-week holiday tomorrow<\/a>. Today we got the frontal attack,\u00a0a coordinated campaign of\u00a0street blockades in 26 cities<\/a>, including Berlin, Dresden, Leipzig and Munich. Activists wore printed masks to assume the personae of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Economics Minister Robert Habeck and Transport Minister Volker Wissing, and with their unglued hands unfurled banners declaring \u201cWir brechen das Gesetz<\/em>\u201d \u2013 \u201cWe\u2019re breaking the law\u201d. The message is that the Scholz Government, by not doing more to combat emissions, are guilty of violating the climate legislation and the German constitution. Sudden interference with traffic is dangerous, and today\u2019s protests have already contributed to\u00a0at least one serious accident<\/a>\u00a0in Nuremberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The political establishment, including the Greens, have widely condemned the protesters, and I\u00a0continue to insist<\/a>\u00a0that this is a hint as to their real purpose. Their insane demands allow radical politicians like Robert Habeck to pose as moderates, while they fight to impose climate legislation opposed by three-quarters of the citizenry and a majority even of their own party. If the German state really wanted this to stop, the protesters would all be in jail and their movement under investigation by the political police. Certainly, state media wouldn\u2019t be granting extended interviews to\u00a0Letzte Generation<\/em>\u00a0spokesgirls like Lina Johnsen, allowing them to rehearse their\u00a0doubtful and oblivious talking points<\/a>\u00a0mostly unchallenged before an audience of millions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
